I had always wanted to visit Silver darling's having grown up in Aberdeen. On my trip back to the city I decided to take my parents and some family friends out for a special meal there. The service was what 1st struck me, there wasn't any basically. We ordered wine, which we later had to pour ourselves as with the water. Must admit for one of Scotland's top restaurants I was very surprised on how badly trained the staff were. Even the assistant manager served food from across the table, when there was no need for it. If this were one of Scotland's top restaurants and Aberdeen's finest, I would hate to dine elsewhere. This restaurant is definitely over classed and pricedThe portions were small and to be honest not really that great. My Tuna steak, which was a special that day, came not seared on either side, but like a rubber heal. To top it all not once did the waiter or the assistant manager ask us about the meal, nor say thank you when paid, or in fact even acknowledge us.Never again, definitely the worst service I have experienced in a restaurant in a long timePlease avoid this restaurant, unless all you want is a beautiful view. This cannot be Aberdeen's best.

There are comparatively few top end fish restaurants in Aberdeen other than the ubiquitous fish and chips. The Silver Darling is one of the few. It is situated next to the entrance to the port, next to the harbour master's office. There are good views of the oil field support vessels as they come and go past the entrance. Rumour has it dolphins can sometimes be seen in the water from the restaurant situated on the first floor of the building. The restaurant has been here for several years and has a reputation as one of "the places to go" in Aberdeen, The menu is tantalizing and the dishes are well presented. The portions are quite small although well prepared and enjoyable. The food is of good quality but the portions are quite small. Service is slow enough to suggest dishes are being individually prepared.Silver Darling appears to aim to be one of the top Aberdeen restaurants. Many of the customers are probably having company paid meals. I find the atmosphere is a bit pretentious. My advice would be to go there only when the meal can be put on an expense account. Two stars for value, four for quality.
