I would just like to say a big thankyou to Kevin and Zadie and the rest of the staff who gave us such excellent service and were on hand to help in making our special birthday celebrations go off so smoothly. The food was delicious and staff managed to serve over 20 people, in ages varying from 10-80, very promptly and in a really friendly manner. The venue is lovely and I have always found the staff here helpful.Unlike previous comments I have no complaints about the Swallows Return and would recommend that other families try this restaurant. We have eaten here several times before, and on the basis of the service we received last weekend, we will definitely be back again soon - and hopefully booking other celebrations here in the future!

Better than average for a chain

We eat here every now and then but always on a weekday lunch/eve. True the service could be a bit quicker/more cheerful but generally the food isn't bad considering the sort of place it is and the price. I wouldn't go there for a special occasion but it makes a nice change from cooking myself. Clean and well maintained but do we really want to see xmas decs out advertising advanced bookings in August? A simple blackboard with a notice would have been much more apt.

Do your self a favour and don't bother dining at this restaurant. It may be great for Swallows but people expect good service and hot food! Dined here recently and was impressed by the venue but the service really lets them down.

Thursday 24th January 2008 (rewritten-13th March 2008)This was supposed to be a special night out. The ambience could be described as cold and indifferent. Not so my Steak, Mushroom and Guinness pie which had been reheated so many times it was totally dried out. It looked fine from the outside but when the puff-pastry lid was removed, the contents had been reduced to and 15mm layer of sediment that had the taste and consistency of an OXO cube. A tide mark near the lip of the dish showed where the gravy level had originally been.So if you want a meal prepared by kitchen staff who seemingly haven't a clue about good kitchen practice and leave pies in the warming plate for days and days, this is the place to go. It makes you wonder what other horrors they cook up in the place.Neither the manager nor the chef bothered to put in an appearence to tender an appology. My complaint to Mitchells and Butlers was rewarded on the 7th February 2008, with the following statement:_"May I stress that these issues, along with overall standards within the Swallows Return Worthing have been addressed with retraining of his (manager's) team and a more focussed attitude towards quality and standards in order to continually meet our guests' expectations".It sounds like 'Fistralrocks' and 'Mumstheword' would disagree with that statement. All complaints should be addressed to Mr Bond, Business Retail Manager. Mitchells and Butlers. 27 Fleet St. Birmingham. B3 1JP.

Terrible, terrible, terrible

We went there on a Sunday for a friends birthday lunch as we fancied roast, unfortunately the occasion was ruined by the poor service and terrible food. We ordered drinks at the bar before we sat down, it took 35 minutes to be served and we waited another half hour to be seated. We got our starters an hour after we ordered them, and they were actually quite tasty but not really worth the wait. It then took another 35 mins between our starters being cleared away and our mains brought over. The main courses all arrived at different times meaning we didnt actually get to eat together, and had quite obviously been sitting under the heat lights for some time. Most of the roasts were missing at least one thing and the one slice of beef one of us got was about 60% fat. We didnt stay for dessert. All in all, very disappointing, which is a shame as its a lovely looking place, but incompetent chefs and miserable vacant looing staff definately ruin the place.
