About us

For 15 years First Choice has been sweeping chimneys in Oxfordshire, we are members of NACS (National Association of Chimney Sweeps) and fully insured. We are also HETAS registered installers, the official body of solid fuel appliances, to ensure that with regular sweeping your stove remains a safe and valuable addition to your home for years to come.

We supply and install from most leading manufacturers and we do not work on a commission basis, or sub - contract our installations to external fitting teams, you can be sure we offer fully independent advice to suit your individual requirements. Twin wall chimney systems are available if you do not have a fireplace, and if you are considering installing your own stove, contact us first to ensure it is suitable and will conform to Building Regulations.

Fireplaces

Many of the stoves we fit in Oxford and the surrounding areas are installed into existing fireplaces, but if you don't have a fireplace don't worry, you can still have a stove in your home.

As specialists in stoves and chimney specifications, we can tell you what your options are with regards to fitting a stove in your fireplace.

Many fireplaces have a much larger ‘builder's opening' where your stove can be installed. Preparing this area is part of the comprehensive installation service we can provide.

Whether you have a stove or an open fire, chimney sweeping and cleaning should be a regular part of your household maintenance. NACS recommends varying frequencies for sweeping depending on the kind of fuel you burn:

1 x per year for smokeless fuel
2x per year for coal
4x per year for wood – according to use.

Logs

Logs are an excellent source of fuel for people with wood burning stoves in Oxford, as they are natural, renewable, and carbon neutral.

Unless you have your own supply of wood it is best to source your logs from a reputable supplier, so you know they have been seasoned properly and are from well managed trees – using pollarding, for example. (This is an ancient method of harvesting hardwood logs that increases the tree's lifespan.)

Logs are carbon neutral because they emit the same amount of carbon that the tree absorbed during its lifetime – and the same amount as if it had been left to rot.
