We booked this for my husband's birthday, 6 adults and 2 children. After reading some of these reviews we were nervous! We needed have been! Staff were friendly and helpful, and really polite. Made a point of asking the children themselves what they would like, and asking them if they were enjoying the food. Food was superb!! Especially the salt and pepper squid, the lemongrass chicken and the crispy chilli beef. Could not fault the food, both in terms of quality and quantity. Deep fried ice-cream was sublime! Drinks - ok, slightly expensive - but still makes the evening a good deal! I'd go back!

Good choice of food

After being unable to book a table for the evening on many occasions my partner suggested we should go for lunch one saturday afternoon. Having recently moved to the arear we have found it hard to find a chinese restaurant we like, the thai elephant may fill that gap. The waiters were friendly and attentive. The food was nice, a good selection, it was nice to be able to try a few things and get a decent amount of food. We paid about £30 for food between us and figured out from the menu we had eaten way more then this so good value for money. I would recommend people to go here if they can get a booking.

Went with a few of us to the 1st sitting, my impression was everything seems to be deep fried and you are served by attentive staff and told what the dishes are, but after a minute or so things look the same when in batter and you tend to eat and pick anything for the sake of it, and thats only the starters. Good choice overall on the menu, value for money? possibly, chicken i thought looked questionable, left after my stomach couldnt take any more, (not good). decor looked a bit dated, ambience was good, extremely busy, seemed to be there quite a while, child friendly, would i go there again? it was good to experience the place but any more visits would risk a connery (as dell boy would say). takeaway would be a good move possibly, all in all the amount of food that was deep fried surprised me.

I have eaten on many occasions at the Thai Elephant as a couple and as part of a larger group and the food is excellent! It is always served quickly and piping hot and fresh, the chicken in banana leaves is juicy and succulent and the egg fried rice is fragrant and beautifully cooked. The menu is varied and extensive, crispy duck/lamb, sesame toast, different rices, tempura mushrooms, many thai curries ooh and tempura ice cream YUMMMMMMMY. All the staff are courteous and polite and if you have been there before then you will know that as they are so popular (I have never seen an empty table) they do have a sittings policy on their busy nights 6pm or 9pm. We always have 2 rounds of starters and then go on to the 'main' course options , they tend to give you a smaller portion to begin with because if you don't like it , it would be a waste but there is nothing to stop you ordering the same dish more than once - also if you want a smaller portion (one in our party likes squid but it is only him that likes it ) you can say just for 1 person and they will give you a small portion, this also works in reverse eg satay chicken which we LOVE we ask for a large portion. It is without doubt one of my favourite restaurants and I always look forward to a visit because it is the best!!!

Completely agree with the last reviewer. When I tried to book, the reception on the phone was very cold, and we had to be squeezed into an early 'sitting',which completely made the dining out experience feel impersonal, and reminiscent of school dinners. When we arrived everything felt incredibly rushed, and then the food came fast and furious, with not an ounce of presentation. Their was a very poor vegetarian selection, and even though it's an all you can eat sort of buffet...They strictly warn you not to over order or you will be charged extra, it put me off from ordering seperate veggie stuff for myself, because as everything is huge piles of food, it may not have gotten eaten (If food is left, this is how they assess if they should charge you more). The whole experience felt very uncouth unpleasant and greedy, the place is completely lacking in atmosphere, and seemed a tad grubby.

Absolutely brillant food,I dont no what everyone is going on about is was brillant i went there last night for my boyfriends 19th your reviews nearly put me off but as you say dont knock anything before you try it so dont let these people put you off the service was amazing and the first set of starters turned up within seconds,The food was devine and tasted loveley everything was cooked to perfectation.I dont think i could of asked for a better resturant the service is quick you can relax while you eat your food which is very unusal as most resturant i feel rushed, order as much as you like on starters main meals and desserts overall it is a super resturant i will defiantly be going back worth every penny.

Very dissapointed

Oriental style food made from the cheapest ingredients that they can buy. To call this Thai food is an insult, my Wife is Thai and we agreed we would never want to go back. Even the spring rolls were stuffed with over boiled cabbage and carrot and made us both reach when we bit into it. For the same price you can take you pick of so many good Thai Restuarants in Brighton and Hove town centre. Sorry to be negative but I thought people needed to know and you won't see many Chinese or Thai eating here.

Truly Disappointing...

Service

Quality

Value

I'm sorry to convey that whilst finding this restaurant to have a decent decor, clean loos, and waitstaff who work hard , the meal we were served was truly disappointing- tasted like heated up worse than Asda ready made. Mediocre quality, chicken so saturated in brine is was bloated and sorrowful. I'd swear on my dead Gran's grave that one dish contained mint toothpaste as a major ingredient in the sauce! A 9 thumbs down experience...

Going The Extra Mile (To Brighton)

Service

Quality

Value

If you want authentic Thai food don't stop in Peacehaven but go the extra few miles to Brighton where there are some really nice restaurants. if Royston Vasey had a thai restaurant it would be The Thai Elephant. Our experience was made worse by the deafening Mariah Carey album being piped out. But we soon forgot about this when we tried the food. The malaysian chicken could have been renamed chicken a la toothpaste whilst the crispy duck was more decomposed than crispy. The tomato based sauces were clearly made from ketchup and the salad reminded me of sauerkraut. Nice view on a sunny day.
