My family and I went here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon after a recommendation from a friend. Our first impression was of a very olde worlde style and ambience. The pub has several Awards for Best Pub and these are well deserved. The service was friendly, helpful and efficient. The menu was not overly complicated and many of the meals available were homemade, which appeals to me. We had our meals delivered quickly, considering the place was already quite busy. We were all impressed by the meals; the portions were generous and everything was cooked to suite our tastes. Even the most critical of our family group admitted that the steak & ale pie was the best he had ever tasted! My only disappointment was that they had run out of homemade corned beef pie, which I had been told was one of the best meals on the menu. The pub also serves a good selection of ales on draught and this went down well with the drinkers in our group. The dessert menu choice was quite limited but by then, we were pleasantly full but decided to share the "toffee lumpy bumpy" [a concotion of cheesecake, toffee and sponge] just because it sounded so intriguing. Again, this was very rich and a dessert I had never tasted before. The atmosphere was one of old-fashioned, relaxing charm - no loud music to spoil conversation. All in all, we had a great time and will definitely visit again, hopefully sooner rather than later.
