About

About us

I am a Chartered Architect, based in Kinnesswood in Perth and Kinross, close to Fife where I was based for 8 years. I am registered with the ARB (Architects Registration Board) and an Associate Member of the RIAS (Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland RIAS).

My projects are mainly located throughout Fife and Perth and Kinross-shire, though occasionally further afield.

Currently I have numerous projects in progress around Perth and Kinross and Fife, in places such as Kinross, Perth, Milnathort, Cleish, Crook of Devon, Duncrievie, Luthrie, Pitlessie, Drum, Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes, Cupar, Dunfermline, Balmullo, Burntisland, Dalgety Bay, Markinch, East Wemyss, Falkland, East Neuk, Limekilns, St Andrews and rural Fife.

Many of my projects are domestic in nature, comprising new build houses, home extensions, house extensions, loft conversions, and home alterations. I have experience in a wide variety of commercial building types, educational, medical and special needs.

I provide all architectural services including interiors, with a strong emphasis on design.

I can also make planning applications and building warrant submissions as part of a limited service.

About me

I set up practice on my own, working from my home office in Kirkcaldy, Fife at the start of 2005 and haven't looked back since! In October 2013 I moved to the more rural setting of Kinnesswood, near Kinross. It has proved to be a good move, as most of Fife remains easily accessible, as is the Kinross area, right up to Perth. This has brought new and exciting challenges and I hope it continues to bring many more.

Before this I spent 9 years in private practice in Edinburgh, working on a wide variety of project types.

After graduating from university I worked at Michael Laird Architects for 3 years, and was involved in very large scale commercial projects such as office buildings, industrial buildings and urban master planning.

I then moved to Campbell and Arnott Architects where I worked as project architect and designer on several very interesting and rewarding projects. These included a development of 80 luxury flats, several large medical centres and a day centre for disabled people as well as housing and leisure projects. I worked for Campbell and Arnott for 6 years before deciding that the person I really wanted to work for was me!

Now that I am a sole practitioner, my projects are a mixture of domestic and commercial, all necessarily on a smaller scale than when I was working in larger practices. I enjoy the challenges presented by working on smaller projects, often with existing buildings.

I approach each project as an individual entity, with no preconceived solutions. I always work with the client to formulate a clear brief and work within this to try to produce something that is right for the site or building and its users.

Each project differs widely, as it should. Designs always respond to the site and environment. Light and space are of prime importance and it is my job to manipulate these to create a comfortable and attractive environment. Even the most basic, low budget extension does not have to be dull!

I try to make all my projects a little bit different, or a little bit better. I enjoy thinking of solutions that aren't initially obvious, but that improve a building's appearance or layout or internal environment.

I have worked a lot with developers in the past, which has had the benefit of making me a realist where cost is concerned. Therefore, my design aspirations are imaginative but realistic.

services

I deal with, and have experience in, a wide variety of building types.

Most of my projects are domestic and small scale commercial, including interiors.

What I can do for you:

I can help you with your brief: if you have a project in mind but aren't sure exactly what you want to do, you could always ask me.
Design! - this is what the architectural profession is supposed to be about! I don't just "draw up plans". Imagination, personal attention, careful detailing.these will give you a better building.
Full Architectural Service - I can provide a full architectural service from inception to completion
Planning Applications, Warrant Applications - On smaller projects in particular, I can provide design services as well as making the application for the essential statutory consents rather than providing the full architectural service. In crude terms this means that the client is responsible for the project after the building warrant has been granted, and therefore tenders for, and appoints the contractor.
Somewhere in between. I can also carry out work such as site visits (on my own projects) and interior design on an ad hoc basis by agreement, if you have only employed me to apply for the statutory consents.
