McIndoe promote Sun Awareness and SPF30

Following the success our Sun Awareness campaign in 2010 we ran a similar successful campaign this year - patients throughout Sussex and Kent attended free mole check clinics, and our Schools Sun Awareness competition drew to a close yesterday. With all this sun awareness activity and the sun shining in Sussex this week, we read with interest the article published in the Health Section on the BBC Website Guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) stated that "SPF 15 is sufficient if applied adequately ... however, the guidance also acknowledges that to take account of people not applying sufficient quantities of sunscreen, SPF 30 is recommended” Our suggestion to protect your self against sun damaged skin or skin cancer – is keep applying SPF 30 when enjoying the summer weather. If you have any moles or skins lesions causing you concern we recommend you visit your GP in the first instance. Alternatively, should you wish to have an assessment with one of our surgeons please contact the Helpline on 0800 917 4922 or complete the contact form on our website. There will be a charge for this appointment.

Designer surgery or NHS operation

According to the most recent NHS figures (2009), The Mirror reports there has been a 70% increase in the number of women having labia surgery on the NHS. There were 1,118 labia operations in 2008 compared with 669 in 2007 and 404 in 2006.McIndoe Surgical Centre see patients who are often interested in this procedure because physical discomfort is a major problem for them. Labia surgery is less about trying to create the perfect vagina and more about wanting to feel confident about their body and look as they did before child birth, for example. The worrying trend that has been reported is that women are trying create the perfect labia and vagina, comparing it to images found on the internet, but the surgeons at McIndoe Surgical Centre have experience and training in dealing with the reasons for wanting surgery and for portraying the truth about the expected results. A patient will not be offered surgery if we feel the result is not going to match their expectation, and likewise if the surgery is not needed the patient will be counselled in the best option to move forward. Many women can and have benefited from labia surgery, making everyday things such as walking and wearing tight jeans achievable again, your sex life could be improved through renewed self confidence – but the results have to match your expectations and reasons and therefore a consultation with the surgeon of your choice is essential to discuss the options. If you would like to know more about surgery please call our helpline on 0800 917 4922 for confidential advice, or visit our website www.mcindoesurgical.co.uk.

I found the cosmetic surgeon to be reassuring, warm, knowing and sympathetic. He answered all my questions and erased all my doubts. I actually enjoyed my surgery safe in the knowledge that the surgeon working on me cared about me.

I went into McIndoe Surgical Centre as a day case and could not fault anything. All of the team were friendly and efficient and it was spotlessly clean. The food was good and you could choose what you wanted. I wouldn’t hesitate in using it again.

Having always been self conscious of a mole on the side of my face I wanted it removed but was concerned a scar would be far worse. I spoke to Darryl Coombes at McIndoe Surgical Centre and he put me at ease immediately explaining how the procedure would take place. 2 weeks after the operation and there is barely a mark. Thank you to all the staff who were so friendly, caring and understanding.
