PORTOBELLOS - ALDRIDGE

Well, I have to say the review on these pages on 25/2 quite scared me as I had booked my family in for Mothers Day on my mates recommendation. Thank goodness I didn't cancel it - as I was tempted to after reading this awful review! I don't know what restaurant this person went to but it didn't bare any resemblance to the one we went to! I cannot praise it enough. Most restaurants bump up the prices on peak days like Mothers Day and Valentines Day so it was lovely to go somewhere that wasn't trying to rob us! There was a lovely 3 course set menu £12.95 which had a good selection it also had a couple of extra dishes on it that you could pay a supplement for (I went for this lol). My mum however decided (as it was my treat I think!) to choose from the A la Carte menu. She had the most delicious fillet steak which came in a lovely mustard and cream sauce served with chips and a nice side salad. I had the Lasagne which was delicious and my husband had the seabass. We had a bottle of house white and a couple of soft drinks too again very reasonabley priced. We had lovely service and even had the opportunity to have a quick chat with the chef as it is an open kitchen so you can actually see your food cooked none of this microwaved meal in a bag jobs that you get so many places nowadays. As for the new bar that you have to walk through what a refreshing change. Aldridge needs somewhere like this somewhere a bit different where you can go for a drink without worrying about being jostled about by teenagers (or is that me just showing my age??). I have been in since just for a drink with a workmate who said the same - nice for somewhere to go for a relaxing drink. Mothers Day was a lovely experience and I am so glad we went. We will definitely go again and think it is a shame that some people might be put off by the previous review (and what's that about insulting the manager - strikes me the reviewer has issues!!). I found the staff helpful, the food great, the atmosphere relaxing and overall a 10 out of 10 experience. We will be back!!

This restuarant used to offer fantastic food at fantastic value for money and was frequented reguarly by myself with friends and family. Unfortunately there is new management, the set menu no longer offers variety or value for money unless your prepared to pay up to £19 matching the value of the now ridiculously overpriced main menu. The new waiting staff are rude and we were left for long periods of time between courses and without drinks, the food considering it is now more expensive is clearly being cost cutted, one sarter the garlic mushrooms had to be sent back, no taste of garlic or white wine just large boiled mushrooms. Rubbery overcooked prawns in a bland sauce(Tagliatelle with sun blushed tomatoes and king prawns in a cream sauce) and garlic bread which was bread soaked in an absurd amount of butter not even a chip of garlic! In credit the lasagne was very nice. After waitng over 40 minutes for the desert menu which was then rudley slammed on the table we mistakenly chose not one of the two pathetic deserts on offer for the set menu the waitresses response "I'll fetch the manager" The manager, who was clearly frustrated at being pulled away (unnecessarily) from the what can only be described as the OAP WAG parade in what is now "the new over 25 establishment" you have to walk through to enter the resturant was not happy to except our disappointment or critic of the food instead belittled the previous management ranted on about the higher cost of his gas bills, that he was running a business and was there to make money! Please do not be mistaken by my rant this is our second visit under the new management the first also being a poor experience our hope on this return visit was that it may have been teething problems, the result we will never be returning to this resturant again, there is a businessman running an italian establishment in Walsall beginning with an S who will be taking my money for his gas (more like hair replacement) bills I dont even mind that I dont have to walk through a red lit sleaze bar first, as it does provide hot topic table conversation!
