Housed in a little cottage-style building, Shangri La has a wide and varied Cantonese menu, including seafood, seasonal banquets and vegetarian options.Metro: St. James Metro
The Shangri La stands out from the crowd along Stowell Street, the centre of Newcastle's Chinatown. The decor is a strange mixture traditional Chinese restaurant meets Basildon dining room; the red lanterns and assorted Chinese knickknacks sat somewhat uncomfortably against a wallpapered background which was very 1999's council house. But don't let the plastic table clothes or the weird decor put you off, as the food is simply stunning. No, cheap it's not; but here you really do get what you pay for... generous portions of beautifully crafted Chinese food. The Won Ton soup was amongst the finest I have ever sampled and the steamed whole Sea Bass with ginger and spring onions was truly world-class.

The Shangri La is in my opinion the best chinese restaurant on Stowell Street - and there are quite a few. The food is very tasty (as is the decor) and the service is pleasant and with a smile. There are only 2 reasons that I haven't given them 5 stars, one is the price and the fact that they hike the prices at Xmas (however despite this they are always full) and the other is that there is a better restaurant in Newcastle - the Waterside Palace on the Quayside. All in all though, if you want to eat in China Town - look no further than this cracking little place you will not be disapointed.
