Don t leave your customers in the dark

When you put together an ad, or a flyer, or a brochure, or any marketing materials, what are you actually telling your customers? It's very easy to write about "What we offer our customers". It takes a bit more thought, but it's infinitely more effective, if you can think about "What do our customers need and how can we supply it?" It's often about features, advantage and benefits. It's great to talk about them all, but benefits are the best.Features - what your product or service doesAdvantages - how your product and service is better than competitorsBenefits - what that means for your customer: lower costs, greater efficiency, more fun!Don't leave potential customers to work it out for themselves. Top tips on writing newsletters

An ex-colleague was very pleased to hear from me the other day. Not just so we could catch up, but because she needed help, fast. With most of the marketing department being made redundant around her, she had discovered that she was now expected to produce the internal company newsletter. And, she said, she couldn’t write, and didn’t know where to start! So for all those who want to write newsletters but need a bit of help, here are some quick tips. 1. Who is your audience? Customers or staff? This affects the sort of story you include. Staff changes are great for an internal audience, but do your customers really care? 2. What is the point of your newsletter? Again, your goals will affect what you choose to put in the newsletter. If you’re writing an internal newsletter, what role do you want it to play? · As a management tool to explain strategy and changes? · To promote a sense of community? · As a bit of light relief for a Friday afternoon? If you’re writing an executive customer newsletter, what are you hoping to achieve? · To promote new products and services? · To remind customers that you’re there – and promote the brand rather than particular products? · To provide factual and helpful information to support their use of your products and services? 3. How often are you going to publish? Make sure you will have enough to say to keep publishing regularly. People will notice if you produce two issues and run out of steam. Put together a realistic publication schedule, working backwards from delivery day, that gives you enough time to research, write and get approval for your articles. 4. Are you going to do this all by yourself? Can you delegate regular columns or guest spots to other members of staff? 5. Who can you use to proofread? Whether you are a confident writer or not, it is always, but always, a good idea to get someone else to read through your articles before you publish. When we read what we’ve written ourselves, we actually read what we think we’ve written, so we don’t pick up on our own mistakes as often as we should. Don’t rely on a spellchecker!

Is your web site a bit of a mess

Maybe you launched the site in a bit of a hurry (and who doesn't?). Maybe it's been a while since anyone in the business has had time to look at what's there. If they did, they might find that new content has introduced overlaps and inconsistencies. Perhaps when new information has been posted, old, out-of-date stuff hasn't been taken down. Old products have been taken off, haven't they?- - Do your downloads - such as brochures, white papers etc - add real value for your readers or do they just repeat what you say on your site?- Are your press releases all online and up to date?De-clutter your web siteAre you hoarding content on your web site that you don't really need any more? Information that's out of date, or that customers will never want to read again? Maybe content that's duplicated in several different places, making your site overfull and confusing?If so, it's time to de-clutter your web site. Let us cast an eye over your site from the point of view of your customer, and we'll highlight where there are inconsistencies, gaps, confusion - and even spelling mistakes!
