You know me and "chains" - not really a fan, but we had nowhere else to eat near our hotel on a snowy night in February, so Loch Fyne it was. Anyone that read my less than complimentary review of their York outlet, would shudder at the thought of me having to resist a sharp dig at another one, but on the whole it was a success.Rather than the sullen, monosyllabic staff that still characterize the York branch, we had an effusive waitress that had a personality and didn't hide it. A good dose of humour pervaded proceedings and the night flew by.The food was well above average, kippers for starters were hearty, well cured and fresh. The turbot for main course was excellently cooked, just moist enough and delicate so as to glisten when cut. The mussels in garlic were devoured avaraciously and the oysters I am told were excellent.Having eaten at the likes of Martin Wishart or Rick Stein, this was a good league below, but that said, perfectly good comfort food in a convivial atmosphere. What a difference a good host makes. One of our party sent 3 main courses back and we still left smiling !
