Yesterday, in acute dental pain, I fell into the black hole that is the governments 111 service, the multi-million pound answer to everyday medical problems, a black hole that ensnares people and helps no-one. Being a weekend, I quite naturally acquired an abscess which needed antibiotics. the 'out of hours Shrop doc' could not help and neither, inevitably, could the 111 service, offering card read advice as a substitute for medical help. Eventually, in desperation and knowing it could not help dental patients, I went to the Ludlow community hospital minor injuries unit, and fortunately met with nurse 'Nicky'. In so much pain I did not acquire her nursing title, but her evident concern and tenacity eventually secured me a prescription for medication. Her clear, straight to the point, dedication is a credit to this hospital and represents what a community hospital SHOULD be all about. THE CONCERNS OF LOCAL PEOPLE'S HEALTH. Nurse Nicky is clearly a great advertisement for the hospital. A wonderful nurse and profoundly professional about her work. Long live community hospitals!!!
