The quintitential country free house, with great beer, lovely wines and superb food

The Shepherd's Crook is a stunningly beautiful pub with a large terrace that sits on the village green in the tiny village of Crowell, within the open Oxfordshire countryside beneath the Chiltern escarpment. Finally, after 16 months of closure, the pub has been fully restored and opened again on the 27th July 2013, much to the relief and pleasure of its "locals".

The owner and landlord, Jonathan, takes advantage of it being a free house to offer a wide selection of ales, lagers and wines. Holdens West Country Bitter, Black Sheep, West Berkshire Good Old Boy and Rebellion are regularly on tap and, during busy times, even a fifth local ale is put on. The most popular lager is the Czech beer, Budweiser Budvar. The kitchen produces an interesting menu with food that is well above the usual pub standard, using locally sourced produce. Care has been taken to provide culinary excellence in light and very pleasant surroundings, whilst still retaining The Shepherd's Crook primary function as a country pub for both locals and visitors.

The pub opens 11am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 12 noon to 11pm on Sundays. Lunch is served between 12pm and 2pm on Monday to Thursday and 12pm to 2.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Dinner service starts at 7.00pm and continues to 9pm on Monday to Thursday and from 6.30 to 9.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays. On Sundays lunch, including traditional Sunday roasts, is served between 12pm and 5pm; giving plenty of time for a lazy, late Sunday. In the afternoons and Sunday evening the "Shepherd's Crook Platter" is always available for the hungry traveller.
