Our wedding - A tale of broken promises

Service

Quality

Value

The staff at the hotel are a curious mix of the wonderfully attentive, to the quite rude bordering on ignorant. 3 members of staff watched the bride (who stayed the night prior to the wedding) struggle through the reception area no less than SIX TIMES without ever offering her any help whatsoever. We'd have to agree with some previous contributors who found their room somewhat tired and in need of attention, the lighting is beautifully atmospheric but completely useless if you want to do your make up. We too had the excitement of the swiveling toilet seat allied with an interesting carpet stain and a bathroom which was simply neglected and shabby. The room we stayed in boasted 2 beds pushed together as a king and from our party of 5, 3 of us had neck ache the next day, also the generator outside our window kicked in and out all night leaving little chance of peace and quiet. On the Lazaat website you will be promised a meeting with your "team" who will be taking care of you on your big day. This simply didn't happen and this had a knock on effect on the day when none of the staff knew who the groom was until he introduced himself. Similarly just a small thing like the promise of linen napkins on the table was not fulfilled. Paper napkins were supplied, (hardly suitable or a wedding) leaving it to the bride to ask for linen napkins on her wedding morning and then arrange the table, again something that seems insignificant but not if you're the bride to be with other things to do.We were asked for feeback from Lazaat which we sent. It was at this point that we informed him that we had been charged for the room on the night of our wedding which was promised as complimentary, a simple oversight which could be easily rectified. Apparently not.We received a reply from the owner in which he accepted little or nothing in the way of criticism. We were quite surprised that we didn't get a refund or even a credit note for a meal which would have cost them very little. To this day we have not received our refund.

I have visited Lazaat a number of times over the last few years and it has always been a lovely evening out. I have used the restuarant to entertain business guests as well as family and friends and each occasion has always been an excellent dining experience. Imagine my disappointment, then, to visit with two friends on Sunday March 28th to find that everything has changed. The warnings signs were there: only 2 tables occupied. Sundays evenings used to be popular with families taking advantage of a generous 40% off discount. The staff looked miserable, the place looked unkempt. We went straight to our table and ordered drinks. In retorspect this was a mistake since at this point we hadn't been given the menu. When the arrived, I understood why we hadn't seen it earlier; this was a completely different menu, limited to bistro style food, not in keeping with Lazaat's usual style of food. We asked where the a la carte menu was and were told that the menu had changed that week and this was the selection on offer on Sundays. We were offered the new a la carte menu to look at ("great, we thought!!" but were told that we couldn't order from it.... The three adults present ordered the only traditional Lazaat dish on the menu - the house curry. Our junior diner was restricted to the traditional burger option. No bread was offered on the table. We requested some, hoping for traditional flat breads or similar, but instead got whopping chunks of dry white bloomer. Our drinks took a good while to arrive. A second drink for two of our party took evening longer, with one of the options requiring two reminders before it finally arrived. The food was average, portions bistro size - insufficient if, like us, you had not eaten during the day because of your"evening meal out"! The naans served with the curry were not naans, they were hard, dry flatbreads, with no flavour. We asked to see the duty manager to express our disappointment. Eventually someone came out but it was clear that this wasn't the duty manager. We received the same explanation that we received from the waiting staff: the menu had changed that week, they didn't agree weith it, thought it was a bad decision, but management wanted to compete with a restuarant in nearby Beverley. We pointed out that the website showed no intimation that there had been a change in menu or dining style - we were told that it did - so we showed them the website as evidence. Eventually the duty manager did appear, and we went through the same process again. It was difficult not to feel sorry for all the staff since they are clearly the ones who will bear the brunt of customer complaints about this. So - would I go again? If they revert to their previously excellent menu, yes! If I hear the week day a la carte is good, possibly. Sort yourselves out Lazaat - you had it right. If it ain't broken.........

Upmarket hotel and restaurant

Lazaat's is a plush hotel and restaurant on the outskirts of Cottingham, near Hull. Food is modern Mediterranian and Asian and is of a very high quality. The level of service is what you would expect from a top-end restaurant - friendly, smiling waiters, only too keen to provide that extra special touch. Prices are quite expensive but not prohibitively so, and to be honest it is worth the expense. The menu is complimented by an extensive and impressive wine list.Lazaat is also a hotel and has a number of small but well appointed rooms. Again, prices are not bottom end but are reasonable considering the quality of the accommodation. The only downside is that Lazaat is quite remote, which can result in an expensive taxi ride for even the most local visitor!Overall though, a great venue for a night out with that extra special touch. Recommended.

A Bad Wedding Experience

Service

My family booked the use of two rooms for 2 nights, a good ten months in advance of our stay. I was getting married in Hull, and wanted to stay somewhere stylish and quiet the night before and the night of my wedding, so my parents treated me to a stay at Lazaat as a wedding gift. We also recommended the hotel to our friends, many of whom were traveling from overseas. What a mistake. A few weeks before our stay, my father rang to check the booking and there was no record of it!!! Lazaat rang him back soon after and said they had found the booking. This caused undue stress. A few days before the wedding, my father rang to advise that a hairdresser would be coming up to my room, along with a photographer, just to get a shot of me getting ready, This was a huge problem, said the owner. He was incredibly rude to my 61 year old father, apparently 'put out' that we were not using his facility for our wedding ceremony and reception. (With 200+ guests, they would have been too small) The owner tried to tell my father that he would now need to hire extra staff and cleaners, as members of my party may throw confetti, be messy or rowdy. My father explained that no confetti would be thrown - I would simply be staying there, getting ready, and leaving with my father in a classic car. There was no night -before hen do, drunken night before or pranks -it was a serious, calm affair. My father tried to reassure the owner, asking if things could be settled, and the owner said he remained unhappy at having a wedding leave from his hotel, as he " had important, distinguished guests staying who could not be disturbed or neglected". My father was quietly upset, and now very concerned. He's a calm, professional man, who does not like conflict. Despite desperately trying to reach an agreement with the owner, he simply just kept repeating that my stay was simply 'an inconvenience'.Two friends (wedding guests) who had booked independently, arrived to check in as the owner had just finished speaking on the phone to my father. The owner then proceeded to speak ill of my father to the guests - unbeknown to him they were friends of ours. On telling this man they were actually friends of my father, he begged them to be discrete and not say anything. How professional...When i checked in, the front of house staff (who are lovely) seemed embarrassed. We waited an hour for our breakfast the morning of the wedding. We threw no confetti but a car had been broken into, and there was broken glass all over the car park. Someone (probably on e of the afore mentioned distinguished guests!!) had put bubble bath in the water fountain. Classy. The water to our room mysteriously was cut off for the entire morning of my wedding (luckily, I had shower very early) No one else's water appeared to have been cut off. When the photographer arrived, the owner was very rude to her, sighing and shouting. My father arrived, and the owner ignored him. My father had offered to buy him a drink and meet to shake hands the day before, and he had declined, saying he would never be happy with the arrangement. My father, mother, and bridesmaids and I waited quietly for our car in the foyer, We were seated in the reception for around 10 minutes, all the time the owner muttering under his breath to the staff, pacing up and down and sighing. There seemed to be no other guests - there was no one else at breakfast. After an uncomfortable 5 minutes, i approached the owner and politely and calmly asked him if there ws a problem with us, as hotel guests, waiting for our vehicle in the hall way (with it being raining). He said no, sighed and waved me away dismissively. I asked "are you sure?", and he replied, " it's just that we are expecting important guests". It upset me so much, I cried whilst I waited for my car.My brother returned at teatime and could not get his key for his room, and they would not call him a taxi. When he did get his key, they just asked his number and handed it to him - no identification. Security?... Myself and my husband arrived back for the night of our wedding at around half past midnight. My family had booked us their luxurious, expensive 'honeymoon suite' (We had advised them we would be returning at this time) There was no one there. We sat on the carpet, waiting for about half an hour. We walked around the premises. A few guests at the bar suggested we get the key from the office as that is what they had done. We didn't. Finally, someone emerged, and seemed unconcerned that we had not been able to get into the room.If it had not been for the fact that my friends and family are so lovely, it would have ruined my wedding. I spent a fair amount of time in the run up to the wedding worrying about my father, and the undue stress that had been placed upon him. Lazaat - lovely, hardworking cleaning and waiting staff, gorgeous premises. In my opinion, rude, unhelpful, unprofessional senior management, with an owner who bad mouths customers to other guests and appears only interested in personal profit over customer care. I am no bride zilla, but I do expect manners and decency. I am a professional, rational person from a hard working family, and I believe in respect and customer care. I can not recommend this establishment based on my experiences, sadly.

A flavour sensation

We have been to a number of functions - both in the marquee and function room - and although these evenings gave different styles of experience both were enjoyable. The greatest asset to the restaurant however is the food served, which is excellent, and well priced - espeacially the buffet on a lunch time. The decor and surroundings are also a pleasure to experience. A great asset to Cottingham.

Contemporary Dining

My husband and I often dine in this restaurant as it is the closest restaurant to where we live in Skidby. The service is excellent and the food is usually to the highest quality. The ambience of the decoration is comfortable as well. I would strongly recommend this restaurant to anyone who doesn't like bland pub food.

Luxury dining at Lazaats

Service

Quality

Value

Lazaats presents a stylish and warm welcome with friendly staff and a classy decor. The food was served swiftly and was mouthwatering. With delicate flavours and spices that tantalise the palate it is a world away from the stereotypical view of curries and Middle eastern cuisine. Lazaats is a bright spot on the otherwise arid skyline of restaurants in Hull!
