Brilliant, brilliant gallery. It's always worth visiting, for half an hour or half a day. The tapestry in one room takes a good fifteen minutes just to see all the tableaux. Also look out for the most ironic "Helen of Troy" ever painted. The visiting exhibitions have often been outstanding as well - and usually brilliantly curated - for example the recent exhibition about "The Four" (James Herbert McNair, Frances and Margaret McDonald, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh) was really great. The other bonus, of course, is that entry is free, and often the visiting exhibitions are free entry too. I have whiled away several afternoons here - and the cafe's pretty good to boot!

A great day out for all the family - for free!
The Walker Art Gallery is the National Art Gallery of the North. Located on William Brown Street it is easily accessible from Lime Street Station, and is in a truely impressive location next to St Georges Hall, in a row of stunning buildings also housing the City Library and the World Museum.The collection ranges from the 13th century to contemporary pieces, with a separate Craft collection and Sculpture room. Must-sees include a Rembrandt self-portrait, A Hockney pool scene and a Turner landscape.The well curated changing exhibitions are always worth a visit. Recent highlights for me were the Art in the Age of Steam exhibition (great for any little train lovers like my 3 year old) and the Ben Johnson Cityscapes (go and see it until 2nd Nov 08). From Sept 08 you can also see the always intriguing bi-annual John Moores Art Prize.The Walker is outstanding in their art education for children. It offers free art trails and colouring in sheets, but best of all the Big Art for Little Artists space for kids under 8. My 2 boys would happily spend the whole day there! Obviously children can make their own art, but also dress up, listen to sounds, songs and stories, play with toys, read books, look at the exhibits that encourage counting, see historic toys, play art related computer games, dress up magnetic dolls and much more. And all for free. This is really worth a visit, but gets very busy at weekends.

Arttastic!
The walker art gallery houses a large collection of paintings ranging from the classical style to the latest modern contemporary art. You can spend the whole day there if you are a real art lover. The admission is free so it is definitely worth a visit. It is next to the world museum which also has free admission so you can keep yourself occupied for quite a while. There are shops nearby although you would have to walk about 5 min to reach the city centre where the best shopping is at. The art gallery may be a bit boring for little kids but I highly recommend it if you are interested in art.
