Don't miss Quarr Abbey

The isle of Wight has all the obligitory attractions for an English holiday - beach, zoo, theme parks, historic house, castle and a monestary (well, 2 actually). Quarr Abbey is definately worth a visit. Home to a small community of Benedictine monks, it will be of intersest to the religious, lovers of intersting building, gardeners and those just after a nice cup of coffee. the tea shop is set in lovely gardens and has been enlarged to include a farm shop where you can buy seasonal fruit and veg grown at the abbey and a wide selection of other Isle of Wight products. There are teas and coffees - from cappacinos and lattes to earl grey and chilli tea - sandwiches, panninis, cakes made in the abbey kitchen, and daily specials. It gets very busy during the summer, so while your other half is queing for tea and cakes, have a wander around the gardens, feed the pigs, or find a little peace and tranqility in the church.

Tranquillity and more at Quarr Abbey cafe tearooms

This tearoom is for those who want to get a buzz out of their setting as well as their drinks. The wooden cafe itself is rather utilitarian, but the gardens are really pretty with flowers, a large lawn you can sprawl or play with kids on, an allotment with fruit and veg you can sometimes pick up in exchange for a donation. There's even a farm with pigs and goats and horses that the kids can pet and coo over. It's cheap, but on the pricey side of cheap. The cakes are good where they once were great and are made by the monks. There's Minghella's icecream which is made on the island by the father of the late director Anthony Minghella, who grew up here. The crushed strawberries and cream is some of the best I've tasted. And then there's the beautiful and architecturally important all-brick Quarr Abbey, one of the island's most important buildings. You can attend services too if you're inclined. If you've got a sunny day on your hands and you want a place to sit in tranquillity surrounded by grass, flowers and sky then you can't do better. It's like borrowing a garden for the day that somebody else has put a lot of work into.If you're a coffee/tea snob then this isn't for you. Try Osborne House tea rooms for the best cakes and coffee (reflected in the price), but Quarr is surely one of the best places to relax on a sunny day.

Quarr Abbey Tearoom

Oh dear me! What a disappointment. Although I am not a religious person I like architecture and religious buildings have, for me, been a great place to get a good cup of tea and homemade cake or at least a biscuit. Seriously, you can be shopping down the High street on a Saturday and choose to pay an arm and a leg in a packed coffee cafe or you can pop in to the nearest church/cathedral tearoom and get peace, a great brew, often something yummy to fill the gap until dinnertime and all for a very reasonable price. NOT SO QUARR ABBEY. The grounds are lovely with higgeldy piggeldy flower borders overflowing around the tearoom (it looked good at least)but the tea was rather like a supermarket cafe, the scones weary and everything else was uninspiring. The coffee did come in a cafetiere but horror of horrors when I asked for cups they dished out cardboard fast-food restaurant style ones. £5 for one tea, one coffee, one scone and one rock cake. It has such wasted potential, what a shame.
