I have seen ProDub Licence referred to on some DJs websites but I don t know what it is

What is it? ProDub is a licence issued as a joint venture between the MCPS (Mechanical Copyright Protection Society) and PPL (Phonographic Performance Limited) that grants permission for the copying, burning or transferring of music from vinyl, CD, MP3 or CD+G onto a digital format such as an MP3 player, flash drive or laptop, or DJ digital playout system for use in a professional or semi-professional capacity. What does it mean to me? If your DJ is using a digital playout system of any sort, then you should check that he or she can produce a ProDub Licence. The only instance where they should not have one, is if they have downloaded all of their music from legitimate download sites directly onto a computer that they are then using for playout, and have not made any back-up copies whatsoever (which obviously would be of concern, since 'no back-up' is a dangerous situation to be in!) Apart from the fact that your DJ would most likely be operating illegally if they are using a digital system and do not have ProDub, MCPS and PPL have asked venues to prevent people from working at the venue unless they hold a ProDub Licence (if they are using a digital system, obviously) and since venues require other licences from these authorities in order to operate their business, the number taking this advice on board is growing daily. In addition, inspectors are out and about and visit venues at random to check such things. How can I check? Obviously, you don't want any nasty surprises on the night (ie your venue refusing to allow the DJ to use his/her digital playout system, and the DJ not having anything else, or, at best, only a vastly reduced non-digital music collection to use on the night), so you should:- Initially ask your DJ if he/she needs and has a ProDub Licence Obtain a copy of the Licence from him/her, or (if you know his or her name, as opposed to the name of his/her business) you can check for yourself online by clicking here. If you have any other questions, don't forget you can contact us without obligation to ask!About the Author: Angela Langston is the General Manager of Corabar Entertainment, an established provider of mobile DJs in Hertfordhire, Buckinghamshire, North and Central London, as well as the surrounding counties. What is Public Liability Insurance and why I should care whether or not my DJ has it

When you organise a wedding, party or event, you are the person signing the contract with the venue, and (usually) you are the one entering into a contract with the DJ as well, meaning that there is not direct contract between the DJ and the venue, or the DJ and your guests. What would happen if there was an accident? What if damage occurred to property belonging to the venue, or worse, someone was injured (either you, one of your guests, or a member of venue staff) as a result of something the DJ did or didn't do, or by a piece of equipment falling over? Public Liability Insurance (PLI) is insurance to cover liability for damage or injury to property, health or life - both major and minor and, although it primarily protects the DJ, it also ultimately protects you because it means the DJ can cover the cost of any claims arising. Of course, everyone hopes that they will never need to claim on an insurance policy, but, as the venue has a contract with you, they will look to you to pay for any damages. If the DJ does not have public liability insurance, you could end up footing the bill! Although it is not a legal requirement for a DJ to have public liability insurance (PLI) (even though some will try and tell you that it is), every reputable DJ will have PLI in place. It is also worth checking the amount of cover they have as some cheap policies only cover up to £1m - which wouldn't go far if serious damage was done to the venue and/or injury occurred to you, your guests or staff. As well as the DJ showing regard for you and your guests by having PLI in place, many venues will not permit an outside contractor on the premises without PLI cover. Even if they do not stipulate this, it is likely that the venue's own insurance policy will have small print stipulating that the policy is void in the case of the venue allowing uninsured contractors to work on the premises.
