Restaurant - Pub Food in Ongar

My wife and I have visited this restaurant both pre and post the new owners. The first time under the new owners was in Nov 2007 when we went with friends. All agreed the food was delightful and the menu interesting. I read the previous review before visiting the restaurant again and went with trepidation to celebrate our wedding anniversary on 3rd April 2008. I would agree that the restaurant wasn't as busy as in the past but the food was excellent and so was the service. I rarely write reviews of restaurants but having read the previous review felt I should even the score. So go try and see who's right!

This restaurant has been taken over by a couple new to the industry and, at first, the standards of the previous owners were maintained. However, on a couple of recent visits, (in September and November 2007), by my wife and I, we feel the new owners are now loosing out. Not only has the quantity of food on the plate diminished, more importantly, quality has also suffered, especially for the prices they are charging. We were very disappointed and will be unlikely to return now.We note the attendance by other customers appears to be much lower as, when we have been there, tables have been free all night, something, under the old management that never occurred. (You always needed to book in advance but this no longer appears to be the case.) No doubt, because of this downturn in trade, the number of waitresses has been reduced. We used to regularly book meals at the Wheatsheaf because of the quality and quantities of the food served and the class of the service given. This is a very competitive market and now we have found we can gain far better quality from other establishments at a much reduced cost. The Wheatsheaf? A disappointment.
