Restaurant - Indian in Leigh-on-Sea
56 Broadway
Leigh On Sea
Essex
SS9 1AG
Has Mark S been to the same Shima we all know and love? Iam sorry but i strongly agree with Andrew M. Shima is the trend setter for all the restaurants yet to come to our town. Has been an exceptional restaurant since i can remember, and with the new contemporary image it has set (and many have now followed) it is trully top of its class.

Let me build the picture - the restaurant is farily small inside (I would imagine it would seat 30-40 people) and the tables quite close together. It is overly lit (too bright) which detracts from a pleasurable dining experience (as far as I am concerned). The fact that the restaurant is long and narrow(ish), with a full length large glass window facing the broadway, you kind of feel you are in a display box or fishbowl. The food was quite cheap (and indian restaurants are not the most expensive places in the first instance) and I kind of got the impression that it would appeal to people who were looking for a cheap(er) dining experience. My girlfriend and I found this out as the meal progressed, noting how loud some of the people who were dining here and the fact that they dined in larger/roudier groups. The food was ok, the chicken we had was a lille cardboardy, the king prawn tandoori overcooked, not a culinary delight I'm sorry to say. I'm very sorry to say this, but we gave it a try and will not be returning in the next 6-8 months (or unless it looks like it has changed as we walk past). We will continue to travel (the 5 odd miles) to our current favourite one in the Broadway in Thorpe Bay until we find one more locally. So if you're on a budget and looking for a good-value indian, this may be your bag - but if you are looking for a more exclusive dining experience, then this will not be suitable.

A very comfortable restaurant, decorated in a light contemporary style (no flock wallpaper here). I have tried numerous menu options, all of which are excellent, but I usually return to the chicken jalfrezi which is the best I have ever eaten. The small wine list is extremely good, and well matched to the food. The General Bilamoria Merlot being particularly good. There is also ice-cold Cobra available. The service is very good and the staff extremely friendly. All in all a really enjoyable experience.
