Taxman on the war path

The tax man is always looking at ways to collect more tax. They have decided that tax is lost because businesses are not keeing adequate records so they have decided to send out Inspectors to businesses to perform business record checks. They expect to visit 12,000 buisnesses this year and are focusing on small businesses.Lots of business people don't worry because "they have nothing to hide". Unfortunately the taxman's idea of proper records may be rather different to most business people. Here are a few essentials the tax man would want to find (and lots of small businesses don't have)- a separate bank account for all business transactions- a complete record of all sales made - a mileage log showing business v personal travel in your car- a call record identifying the split between business and private phone callsYour accountant will sort out and remove any private items from your business records and adjust where costs have a private and business element, but the taxman won't find those things in your records. So the least you can expect will be a discussion about whether your records are adequate.Using a good accounting system needn't take long and provides you with protection. Something like Xero (check out details on our web site) is low cost, easy to use and links with your accountant and your bank so covers evrything you need as you go along. QBS Business Service also offers you proptection against the cost of dealing with disputes with HMRC. Whilst it won't stop teh tax man calling it at least means you can call in the experts to deal with any problemse
