I found this place while looking for the halal Malay resturant that used to be in Chinatown, Penang Village. It became apparent this had closed down... leaving this as one of the few (only?) malay places that could confirm the food is halal. The food is available as either canteen-style from the ready made hot pans at the counter, school dinner style, or freshly made from the kitchen. I'd recommend the latter if only because I prefer the nasi goreng (friend rice) dishes, which are always cooked separetely and to a very good standard, being neither too soft or overly crunchy. All diners I've taken have been impressed with the quality and quantity of food in the dishes, and prices are reasonable too.As well as the good food, there is also a small sit down area to relax on sofas as you wait, and some toys for kids too! There is also a prayer room available which is small but handy.Overall highly recommended.

Jati does Malaysian and Thai food, quickly, cheaply and tastily! It's an informal atmosphere and popular with students - it's close by both the University of Manchester and Manchester Met (and did I mention it's quick, cheap and tasty?). The best offers are on the daily specials. Just choose one or two curries with rice from the counter. The special starter/main meal combinations are also good value. The menu can look a bit confusing to start with but I think it's hard to go wrong. It's the kind of place to go if you don't want to cook yourself, perhaps not the place for a romantic night out.Unlicensed.

Malay/Thai Cafe Restaurant worth trying

I stumbled upon this place a couple of summers ago while visiting a student friend, and I'm now a regular! The layout is like a cafe, with a counter for the currys and meat dishes, and table service for meals off the menu. The menu is varied with Malay and Thai dishes, although the starters and desserts are a tad generic for oriental restaurants and takeaways.Takeaway is available, currently with a 10% discount! I'm always dropping by after work to pick something up - after 6pm you can park right in front of the restaurant (single yellow line) so it's really handy. The place is modern, clean, and very friendly - I'm half Malaysian and I can tell you it smells and tastes authentic in there, the staff are mostly Malaysian, and most of the customers are Malaysian! Lots of Malaysian students eat there, and I've heard Malaysians I've brought there say it is the closest thing to home in Manchester, especially for this price. My personal recommendations are the Tom Yam and Tom Ka soups, and no matter what you get you must have a large 'Teh Tarik' on the side - a sweet white 'pulled' tea served in a British handled-pint glass. The perfect relaxing drink, and nice on ice in summer too :DPrices are reasonable, especially compared to most takeaways, and given the authentic taste it's good value to me. The Jati economy meal - based on the curries and dishes at the counter - are the best value and quite filling too.Give it a go if you are in the area!
