Legionella bacteria are motile bacteria that can cause Legionellosis

What is Legionella?
Legionella bacteria are motile bacteria that can cause Legionellosis. ‘Legionellosis' is a term that encompasses a collection of diseases, with Legionella Pneumophila sero-group 1 mainly associated with legionellosis. The most common of these is known as ‘Legionnaires' Disease', a form of pneumonia, it is also the most fatal.

The spread of legionella bacteria to humans is mainly through air borne water droplets dispersed by infected air and water systems. Legionella flourishes in air and water systems that operate at optimal temperatures of 20-45 0C . The risk of infection is high when the bacteria are present in these conditions as multiplication and growth of the bacteria will be at its greatest rate.

Legionella is just one form of harmful bacteria that we treat in contaminated water and air systems. Other bacteria such as Pseudomonas can thrive in such conditions and, like legionella, will feed off any nutrients available including rust and bio fouling of a system.

Susceptibility to contracting a disease from these harmful bacteria after exposure is shown to be highly dependent on the type of system in use. There are several high-risk systems that are recognised dangers to the environment due to the production of water vapor droplets to the surrounding environment. Infection can also be dependent on the person in the affected area. Danger of infection can increase with age, smokers and heavy drinkers also at higher risk. High-risk systems are :

Hot Tubs
Air Conditioning Units
Shower Heads
Although the presence of legionella bacteria has been detected in most natural water systems, the levels are low and harmless as the conditions for growth are unfavorable. The threat of Legionnaires' disease spreading from natural water systems is low. However, poorly managed man made water systems that operate at high temperatures pose a greater threat as conditions can favour the growth of the harmful bacteria.

Do I need a Legionella Risk Assessment?

Required by law, under the legislation detailed in the Health and Safety Work Act (1974) and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (1999), employers have a responsibility to assess the risk posed by the potential for legionella colonisation

How we can help

Enviroliance offers extensive and compliant Legionella Risk Assessments of man-made water systems to identify any potential risks present and the control measures required to deal with them. Risk assessments should be carried out regularly on water systems that are at high risk of harboring harmful bacteria. Risk assessments provide the employer with confidence that their systems are safe for use and pose no threat to the surrounding environment. The assessment also ensures that any control measure already in place is effective in maintaining low levels of the bacteria in the long term.

At Enviroliance, our team is fully accredited to conduct high quality risk assessments on site to protect our clients and their employees from exposure to legionella bacteria. The assessment involves a comprehensive investigation into all possible sites where the bacteria may be present; the risks associated with work carried out on these sites and any resulting health risks.

Following inspection of the site, the findings of the inspection are comprised into a written record for our clients and will include the following:

Level of risk present
Recommended control procedures
Schematic of the site

Do I need my tanks cleaned ?

Why is this important for Legionella Control? How often should i do this?

Enviroliance can carry our Tank Inspection, this is where we shall tell you if a Tank Cleaning and Disinfection is required to maintain your Legionella control. If requested Enviroliance can also carry this work out..

In order to minimize the risk of waterborne bacteria being present in a water system, water storage tanks should be inspected and cleaned on a regular basis.

Over time, storage tanks are susceptible to contamination of debris and sediment build up, affecting the quality of the water supply. Microbial activity feed off fouling in a tank and so the risk of spreading disease is a high risk in poorly maintained tanks.

The growth of microbes in a water tank allows formation of slime within the tank. The microbial biofilm slime acts as a barrier allowing the growth of harmful bacteria making it difficult to remove. Storage tanks are therefore required to be flushed with disinfecting chemicals to remove any buildup of biofilm and to prevent stagnation of water.

What we offer:

We will send out a team of fully trained engineers to conduct a full tank inspection to determine the quality of water supply from the source
If a clean and disinfection is required after inspection, Enviroliance will conduct a full drain, clean and disinfection of the tank following the guidelines outlined in ACoP L8
Upon completion the client will receive a document of certification to acknowledge the cleaning and disinfection of the tank.

The Frequency of your tank cleaning will depend on the system you have. The inspection frequency will be listed on your Risk Assessment

Please call to speak to one of our expects regarding Tank Inspection, Cleaning and Disinfection today.

Do I or my staff need Legionella Awareness Training?

Enviroliance offers a range of training directed at various levels of experience. We offer on-site courses or run courses at a network of venues throughout the UK. Enviroliance is certified by the Legionella Control Association to deliver Legionella awareness training courses.

Our Legionella Awareness courses are designed to provide attendees with the knowledge they need to competently carry out the monitoring tasks as per the ACoP L8 guidelines. The course will help you understand the risk that Legionella poses This will help you to design systems and working practices that your business needs to stay ahead. Alternatively, this course will give you the knowledge to make confident and informed choices when commissioning others to take this on for you.

The majority of our training courses are ½ day events which we cover 5 modules;

Background to the Disease and Organisms
Legislation – Health and Safety
Medical Aspects and Managing Water Systems.
Sampling and Analysis.
Biofilms
Monitoring and Maintenance tanks.
Our Staff have over 150 year's experience. Our training is delivered by our Managing Director or one of two senior consultants. All have at least 25 years industry experience. We believe that their experience makes it a much more interesting and informative training course. We would ask attendees to challenge us with questions throughout.
