About Us

Gordon and Lin Muirhead are pleased to welcome you to Ptarmigan House, a Scottish Tourist Board Three-Star guest house created from a 19th century shooting lodge. We offer first class bed and breakfast accommodation. Our bedrooms are bright, tastefully decorated, and all have en suite facilities. The House sits in its own grounds with ample parking. Pubs, restaurants, swimming pool, leisure facilities and a golf course are all within five minutes' walk. Blair Atholl is an ideal centre or touring the Highlands, walking the hills and mountains, golf and mountain biking. We are just one mile from Blair Castle, traditional home of the Dukes of Atholl and the Atholl Highlanders, and one of Scotland's best known castles. Three miles to the south is Killiecrankie, site of the famous battle. We also offer Three-Star self catering accommodation in a separate house that sleeps up to eight.

Accommodation

Ptarmigan House (pronounced Tarmigan) lies on the south side of Blair Atholl. The house was originally a shooting lodge and possesses fine views towards the hills. The rooms are tastefully decorated and equipped with television and tea and coffee facilities. All rooms have en suite facilities. Breakfast is served in the large dining room. Guests can choose either a continental breakfast or a traditional cooked breakfast. Your hosts are Gordon and Lin Muirhead. Born in Blair Atholl, Gordon has represented Scotland at curling, gaining two World Silver Medals. He also plays golf and has taken up motorcycling. Lin is a shopaholic and is always ready to point our lady guests toward a bargain! They have three childen, Glen, Eve and Thomas. Blair Atholl has a population of about 300 and is located at the southern gateway to the Scottish Highlands. The focal point of the village is Blair Castle, which is open to the public from Easter until late September.

Blair Atholl and Perthshire

Blair Atholl is an ideal centre for touring the Scottish Highlands. To the north lie the Cairngorm Mountains, Loch Ness and Inverness (90 mins), while to the west are Loch Tummel, the famous Queens View, Loch Rannoch, Schiehallion, and bleak Rannoch Moor. On the southern side are Dunkeld, Crieff and Perth (all within 45 mins). To the east is Glenshee and Braemar, and Balmoral is just over 50 miles away. Pitlochry lies 7 miles to the south, famous for its Festival Theatre. There are also two whisky distilleries, one of which is the smallest in Scotland, and enough shops to keep the ladies happy. And in Blair Atholl itself there are a number of attractions, with Blair Castle, one of Scotland's best known castles, chief among them.
