Thumbs up

Nice food and friendly staff help to make this bar / bistro a hip place to go. I get what they are doing here but wish they'd smarten in up a touch or at least the waiting staff. Other than that a thumbs up from me ;-)

Intriguing twist on pub grub

Service

The Butterfly and Pig provides one of the most exceptional takes on pub grubs that I have experienced in a long time. The twist is that all the food is locally sourced, good quality and freshly prepared. As you can imagine, this is potentially challenging in Scotland in winter - there's only so much you can do with neeps! Yet the creativity and passion that goes into both the menu design and food is astonishing. In three recent visits, I tried their bean stew (simple, yet healthy and delicious), mushrooms on toast (five different kinds of field mushrooms served in a skillet with home made bread) and - best of all - a feast to share. The chef came out of the kitchen to ask what we fancied eating, told us what had just come in fresh, and we worked out a menu together, Service is excellent and friendly, and the atmosphere is a comfortable boho chic with interesting touches. Really one of the best experiences eating out I have had in a long time.

Superduper Quirkiness!

Kitsch-tastic - The Butterfly and The Pig (or Pig and Butterfly if you're drunk already and get confused like me) is a fantastic bar running along Bath Street. Like stepping into the world of Alice in Wonderland, the decor is like your Granny's front room mixed with shabby chic furnishings and laid-back style. The portions are huge, so if your eyes are bigger than your belly choose wisely! Best bit is you can gain access to the Buff Club to continue your experience post-midnight. Fab!

relaxed eating and drinking with unusual decor

The Butterfly and Pig is lovely and mismatched but in a trendy kind of way. Everything is heavy wood and sumptious old-fashioned sofas, with great fabric wallpaper, it makes you feel like you have stepped back in time leaving your worries firmly in the present. It attracts a lively crowd who don't take themselves too seriously and always tends to be pretty full, which is a good sign, but can leave you without a seat. Prices are reasonable. Monday night they run an original pub quiz, in fact the format varies from week to week, but its good fun and a bit more interesting than your standard 'what's the capital of...'. With a restaurant and a club, all your evening entertainment needs are under the one roof.
