Nanakusa: the seven edible wild herbs of spring
* Seri [water dropwort/Japanese parsley]
* Nazuna [shepherd's purse]
* Hahakogusa [cudweed]
* Hakobe [chickweed]
* Konitabirako [nipple wort]
* Suzuna [a species of turnip]
* Suzushiro [(garden) radish]
The seven herbs, or nanakusa, are traditionally eaten on the 7th day of the first month of the new year (7th January) as part of a long-standing Japanese custom dating back to the 8th century.
The herbs are consumed for their health benefits and promote wellbeing, longevity, nourishmentand vitality.
Ancient belief holds that the herbs remove evil from the body and prevent illness.
We at Nanakusa promise to use the freshest local produce and specially sourced Japanese ingredients in our delicious and authentic Japanese food.
We don't claim to be able to ward off evil spirits, but our grub will give you a nice warm feeling in your tummy!
