There really is nowhere better in Edinburgh to get a big breakfast and recover from the night before!Lovely quaint atmospheric surroundings, friendly service, good menus and great foodAlways has a good selection of warm, comforting grub - just what you need to keep the cold out (which is necessary all year round in Edinburgh!)I've been for breakfast, lunch and dinner here (not on the same day though) and am never disappointedGreat mixed bunch of people make it an interesting place to people watch too!

Blue Moon Cafe

The Blue Moon has been part of Edinburgh's 'pink triangle' for many years. It's straight friendly and used by straight local office worker who obviously feel comfortable there, but it's customers are gay in the main. Watching the people going in and out from my preferred choice of the Olive Branch across the road, shows that, especially at the weekends, the LGBT crowd is what fills the cafe up.I'm always impressed by the friendliness and welcoming nature of the staff. From a warm greeting when arriving to extremely pleasant table service the staff are the cafe's secret weapon. If you're a regular then the service is even friendlier. The popularity of the the cafe shows either how highly it is regarded in the local community or how few gay alternatives there are, hopefully the former. The menu isn't exciting and consists of 'pub grub' type dishes. Quality is OK but not wonderful - pretty run of the mill, but not too expensive. The Blue Moon Cafe is at 1 Barony Street, Edinburgh, EH1 3SB. Telephone: 0131 556 2788 for opening hours etc.

Gay pub grub

Though it's been a major landmark in Edinburgh's tiny gay district for over twenty years, it's not that obvious until you're inside – amid the overwhelmingly gay clientele, cheerfully camp servers and the never-ending stream of Kylie hits (with literally nothing else played for the hour or so that I was there). But don't let that worry you if you're straight since you'll certainly not be made to feel uneasy. There's nothing particularly exciting on the menu, which is based mostly around comfort pub food, but seems nonetheless to be a big hit among patrons who savour piles of nachos, chilli and pasta dishes (which include macaroni cheese in a kitschy nod to all things loveably un-hip). Even so the food could do with some more zest and fresher ingredients, although the salmon salad I had – grilled and served on a bed of organic lettuce (I could tell because it's grittiness suggested it hadn't been washed as well as it might) – was simple, really quite good and very filling – for only £7.The Cafe opens at 10am on Saturdays and Sundays and is probably a reliable spot for a good hangover-curing cooked breakfast.
