RADAR (Risk Avoidance and Danger Awareness Resource) is Northern Ireland’s first fully interactive, safety and life skills education centre. Opening in Autumn 2014, RADAR provides safety-focused learning experiences for children and young people throughout Northern Ireland. RADAR aims to improve risk awareness for children and young people, as well as helping children understand the consequences of their actions.
Safety and life skills centres are exciting and realistic indoor townscapes that include life-like scenarios such as a street scene, road crossing, car, water scene, railway, house, shop and much more. These scenarios enable the delivery of practical, interactive, scenario-based education to children and young people in safety, citizenship and life skills
RADAR is aimed at groups of P6/7 school children and young people aged between 16 and 24. School groups will take an interactive tour covering 8 scenarios with trained staff for 2 hours and 15 minutes. RADAR will be open to school visits during the school term and offer morning and afternoon visits.
As the project develops community and youth groups can book the centre for use in the evenings and Saturdays. Groups of young people will experience 3 to 4 scenarios which will last up to 45 minutes each.
Taking the lead in this innovate project the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and the Police Service of Northern Ireland are joined by the Department of the Environment (Road Safety), Northern Ireland Policing Board, The Prince’s Trust and others to build this multi agency RADAR project and work towards creating safer communities in Northern Ireland through experiential learning in a state-of-the-art ‘village’.
