When identical twin brothers Martin and John Memory first qualified as optometrists in 1980, they didn't want to work for a chain. They were also reluctant to follow conventional 20-minute eye testing protocols, which prioritised patient volumes over individualised care. They wanted the freedom to create a unique patient experience that would deliver quality of care across both the eye examination and glasses selection, with a quality of service tailored to the individual needs of each patient - all delivered in a beautiful environment. In short, they wanted the experience to be positive and memorable.
Driven by this vision, aged 24 and having worked in several high street opticians, Martin and John set up Memory Opticians. Back in 1982, it operated from a tiny two-up two-down house in Amesbury, which the brothers converted to an optical practice. A few years later (and after rapid growth), they relocated to a new retail development being built across the road.
