At last, an excellent local horologist

Andrew is steadily working his way through my collection of clocks and other mechanical devices, servicing and repairing them as necessary. I have found his work to be of the highest quality and is delivered with a sense of humour that I can relate to. As with most people in his trade, he has too much work on and timescales sometimes suffer as a result but to be fair you are prewarned about this so it doesn't come as a surprise. I consider his charges to be very reasonable and I would have no hesitation in recommending Andrew for any horological or related work.

I have a longcase (Grandfather) clock that has been in the family since new c.1820 for which I now have responsibility and decided that some maintenance would be appropriate. After much investigation I approached a local antiques dealer who recommended Andrew. I was so pleased to find a local chap and I can only reiterate what is said in the other reviews. He provided accurate quotes and advice with regard options for the maintenance/repairs basic and overhaul plus he has a contact who restores the dial. Suffice to say that I had the overhaul and dial restoration undertaken with stunning results. Please be aware that the task takes a little while, a couple of months, but it is certainly worth the wait. The clock is a joy behold and a pleasure to see. Thank you Andrew.

Andrew came highly recommended by a colleague, who had struggled to find a reliable and straightforward clock maker and restorer, and came across Andrew again by recommendation. The clock we have is really not anything to write home about but it holds deep sentimental memories and value as it belonged to my late father. I took it to Andrew's workshop and he had a look and said what he thought was wrong. He said he would have a more detailed look when he had a bit more time as he is so very busy. Two days later he phoned me and gave me a quote (not an estimate as he likes to let you know what to expect rather than be wondering) it was within budget so I said to go ahead. Andrew explained that it would be six to eight weeks before we would see it again and we waited. Bang on six weeks he called us to say dad's clock was ready and he would bring it back. Bless him he arrived when he said and had a bag with all the old parts in he had replaced and gave them to us but lord knows what we will do with them !! The clock looked like new, the case was all polished and the front brass ring where the glass is was all polished and it looked beautiful. I nearly burst into tears as it was so nice to see it as it would have been back in the 1940's. Dad would have been over the moon to have seen it chiming and working so well not to mention it looking as if it had just come from the Bon Marche. Thank you so very much for getting 'Dad's clock' looking and working so well, your'e a star.

When I moved to Wiltshire, I had difficulty finding a reliable clockmaker to service some venerable clocks which I own. After a few disappointing experiences, a friend recommended Andrew Roan who had recently repaired an old clock for her. Since then, Andrew has carried out major work on three old family clocks (and an aneroid barometer) for me. On each occasion, I have been delighted with the high standard of his workmanship and service. He does not promise anything that he cannot deliver and he keeps to his promised completion date. His knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, clocks and barometers is very evident. Having seen his workshop, I can confirm that it is well-equipped and well-organised; reflecting his professionalism.

We had an old American Wall Clock that just stopped. Andrew came to the rescue. We were very surprised that he lived local to us and arranged to visit to examine the clock. He gave us so much information about the history and date of the clock, we were amazed. He gave us an estimate on price and completion of the work, which he confirmed by email later that day. We received progress photos as he worked on the clock, which we were delighted with and showed just how enthusiastic and professional he is. It arrived back looking like new and WORKING. It is very obvious that Andrew loves clocks and has a work ethic that is rarely seen today. I would highly recommend Andrew to anyone and we appreciate his work so much, we have already asked him to look at other two longcase clocks that need his expertise.

Good chap, had an anniversary ball clock belonging to my dear old nan and it wasn't working so phoned Andy and he popped and had a butchers at the clock after I tried to get a clock man in Bath to look at it. Don't panic Mr Mannering can soon get it going again so he took it away and three weeks later it was back and going a treat and still is. Cool guy and easy to talk to, not the pompous prat who talks down to you I discovered when I went to the clock place in Bath. Cheers mate

I/we am/are experienced clock collector/s of many years and frequently require the services of an expert horologist to look after my/our collection. Andrew was highly recommended by my partners sister, whom he had attended on in the past, to look at one of our rare and valuable London bracket clocks and I cannot speak highly enough of him. He is very knowledgeable, immensely thorough, highly professional, exceedingly understanding, very polite and totally honest and not without a sense of humour ! He photographs and emails pictures of works undertaken as it proceeds and always quotes an exact amount for said reparations; if any further issues are discovered I/we am/are always consulted prior to my/our confirmation to proceed. In fairness, and for honesty in this review, I must just add that Andrew is very busy and his four to six week turn around did turn into seven weeks but I am nit picking and maybe too critical. I cannot extol my recommendations further and thank him for the services he has proffered thus far. I/we will certainly be using him in the future as I/we have other items that require to 'be kept in order'. Julian Mitchell-Harkness OBE and Marcus Abbott

Grandfather clock Service and repair

We found out about Andrew Roan through a friend of a friend who mentioned how good and reliable he was in any kind of clock maintenance which is always a good sign being word of mouth so we decided to contact him ref our very old family Grandfather clock that had not been serviced for about 90 years and was looking a bit the worse for wear and we were concerned about it's well being. Andrew very soon came out to visit us and look at the clock taking it all out of the case to we could view it and he explained it to us in detail, he was also very informative and knowledgeable in his detail of age and repairs that it had had over time, we agreed that Andrew take it away for evaluation and sent us a e mailed receipt, he then sent us a series of quotations which we could pick from which we did so with his advice. It was really lovely to receive photos of the work being undertaken at every stage and also went to the trouble of picking out repairs marks and pointing them out to us which for us was a joy, he also identified a couple of things that he felt should be done in the process and we agreed to them which was very useful. He did all this work in very quick time as we mentioned that we would like it done in time for a 102nd birthday and he completed with plenty of time to spare. It was a joy to see when it was returned and he went to a lot of trouble explaining what was done, he also sent a detailed e mail with the work completed and with this and the photos it is a wonderful record going forward. Andy could not have been friendlier, helpful and honest in the way he approached and dealt with this service and repair and we will be returning to him with some more work in due course, we have no hesitation in recommending his work to others who require their various time pieces servicing or repairing and it is so good to know someone that one can trust with this work. Two clocks were giving problems, a round post office clock & an ancient lantern clock that dates from the 1680's. Had a couple of people look at them in the past but they never seemed to be right. Andrew was discovered through a jeweller in Trowbridge after a suggestion of a friend of a friend (sadly he doesn't advertise as he is so busy and a shame as he really knows his stuff and would have saved us time searching ) so we thought we'd ask his opinion. How pleased we were that we did. He visited us and explained what he thought were the problems with the two clocks in a simple but authoritative way and said he would have to take them away. We were apprehensive as they are a part of our family but agreed that it was OK. He promised we would get an email receipt on his return home along with a photo of the clocks, true to his word it was emailed through. The quote to repair/restore both clocks came through a few days later which was a little more than we thought but we agreed and left it at that. We received several updated emails with pictures as the work proceeded and after about five weeks the clocks were done and ready to be brought back all done and dusted. Andrew arrived and sorted the re-hanging of both clocks and spent an age advising on how to wind etc. but not in a patronising way and all was well and the clocks have and are working the best they ever have. We did have one issue, nothing to do with Andrew, where our dear granddaughter pulled the rope on the lantern clock and it fell off of the wall and, thankfully, landed on the sofa. Andrew arranged to come back out to us some 15 miles from his premises and did what was required at no charge. At all times professional, honest and very reliable with good old fashioned service. Thank you from the Perry family.

This was a Smiths mantle clock which was in a sad condition and in need of complete renovation. I undertook to arrange repair for my brother-in -law who is unable to look after his affairs. I found the name of Andrew Roan on the internet and dropped the clock off at his workshop ( he would have been prepared to collect) for him to inspect. He e-mailed within several days with an estimate, which was competitive and included delivery and set up. I asked him to do the repair, which would take several weeks. I was kept up to speed with his progress at all stages and he eventually mailed to say that the clock was ready for him to deliver. He could not have been nicer or more efficient and showed great understanding towards my brother-in-law. The clock is as good as new and I can thoroughly recommend Andrew.

We have a c.1720's grandfather clock (found that it is actually called a longcase clock) and it was in a parlous state. This gentleman was recommended by a friend who had used him in the past and what a first class service we had. Andrew, from Timescape, called and spent an age looking at the clock and explained what would be required. He also said we would have it back between 4 and six weeks, we were a bit apprehensive as we have had things repaired by other people in the past that took six months. He took it away and emailed an estimate, which was very competitive, and within a week we had photos of the work progressing, we were mightily impressed. Low and behold true to his word he emailed to say all was well and it was tested and ready to be delivered back well within his six week timescale. It was brought back and it was like new, repaired, polished and ready to go..........Fantastic. We would certainly recommend him and will definitely use him again, thank you Andrew very much.
