The family-friendly Highdown Hotel in the seaside village of Goring has a traditional feel, from the historic architecture to the homely bar and the charming garden tea rooms. The carvery restaurant has a more mellow, contemporary ambience, with yellow walls, solid wooden tables and tub chairs to relax into after savouring the robust meaty dishes on the menu. Children will enjoy the indoor play area.
One of our favourite beauty spots for about 3 hours leisure, exercise and something to eat overlooking the sea and South Downs.Highdown Hill is a small hill 226 feet high that stands just north of Ferring on the West Sussex coast and is separated from the main bulk of the South Downs to the north. It has had much use in Prehistoric times with a settlement in the Bronze age, fortification in the Iron age, a Roman bath house and a Saxon cemetery, allegedly the burial place of the Saxon King Ælla after the battle at Mount Badon with King Arthur in 516AD. The Fort lies near a crossroads of two ancient trackways. The hill has four other attractions, Highdown Hotel, Highdown Gardens (chalk garden), the tomb of John Oliver who was a local miller and Highdown Tea Rooms. This tea room is on the Trusted Places site and has recently won an award for quality. Highdown Hotel is widely recognised as the best carvery locally based on a 2 for 1 deal.Tourists, Highdown Hill is very popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It has ample free parking and toilets within the Chalk Garden area. Access to the hill by car is from the A259 on the east bound carriageway.
