“What an experience!"
My friends had booked here for a birthday meal having discovered Bella Venezia a couple of weeks previously. Knowing how much I love Italian food they promised me an 'experience', so I arrived not really knowing what kind of 'experience' to expect. I needn't have worried. It is good to remember, before being too quick to comment or criticise, that Italians are passionate about food. And are passionate about enjoying food. The welcome you get here is effusive but genuine. Don't expect a formal dining experience. This is go-with-the-flow, informal, casual dining with excellent food and typical Italian banter. Both chef and staff want you to enjoy what's on the menu - and often what is not! So if what you get isn't quite what you ordered because the chef wants you to try something new, so what? Get stuck in, it'll be delicious. We started with dough balls and aioli, then had succulent prawns and shrimp in tomato sauce as an antipasti. For the pasta course I had an amazing seafood linguine whilst one of my friends had the best carbonara we had both ever tried. The supposedly starter-sized pasta dishes could easily have passed for mains and we were seriously starting to regret nibbling on the breadsticks before the meal. Next our veggie friend had a superb spinach and ricotta cannelloni whilst we tucked into enormous, perfectly cooked steaks with green peppercorn sauce accompanied by creamy sauteed potatoes and firm sweet carrots and broccoli, which sadly didn't get much of a look in. Amazingly we made it to dessert where we all had something different, all creamy, chocolatey and fabulous. All accompanied by a superb Valpolicella and complimentary fireworks and birthday cake, plus constant attention from the waiters and the chef, all keen to ensure we were enjoying ourselves and join in the fun. Great cooking, great hospitality and just a little bit bonkers. What could be more Italian than that?
