Cafe Spoil-Me!
Excellent cafe.Food is top notch for such a small place. I would highly recommend it for a quick lunch. It is worth the slightly higher cost!Coffee quality comes mostly from machine not highly trained baristas - but its a damn good machine! Cappuccinos are perfect every time!Staff are dismissive and not very helpful. Never smile or attempt to please you and make you feel welcome which is a GREAT shame because I love everything else about this place except the staff!The gift shop in the back is SUPERB!!Toilets are always spotless!Acoustics are terrible, the walls bounce everyones conversations around making it difficult to have a nice convo! But its not a major thing.All in all, great place but could be the best in the city if the staff were nicer, friendlier and well trained.

cafe Royal is a wonderful place. Instead of going to the usual starbucks or costa, you really need to take a trip here. Its so much nicer! Rather than plumping for the generic franchises or chain of coffee shops, i went here with my partner during a shopping trip an we had a fabulous time. There is usually a queue, as others have said, however it goes quickly as they are masters of the coffee machine and the art of service. Food is also fabulous here, we have sampled most of it and love it all!! Their cakes and other sweet delicious treats truly are mouth wateringly wonderful! I'm going to get so fat - thanks Cafe Royal!

A Royal Lunch!
I love cafe Royal! I think it's a really nice place to go for a relaxed lunch that's not fast food and isn't a chain.The food is lovely, you can chose sandwiches from the glass counter at the front of the shop or you can order from the big blackboards they have near the till. I normally go for the soup which is homemade, and very tasty! You get big chunks of bread with it too.It can get very busy, but I like that as it has a real atmosphere. Although queuing for 15minues isn't always ideal!The cakes are delicious, a real tasty treat!The staff are friendly and very quick to serve you.In fact, I should go back soon!

Sublime Cafe
Cafe Royal is renowned for being one of the best cafes in Newcastle Upon Tyne. It is an old sytle cafe, nestled alongside your big buck Starbucks and Costa Coffees, looking like an old fashioned, civilised kind of place!Sitting opposite Grainger indoor Market and on a street famed for having the best preserved historical facades in the country, it is in a central, atmospheric location.Inside there are tables, high stools and low sofas - opt for a comfy seat for optimum experience! The cafe serves all sorts of dry and moist cake, sweet and savoury pastries, sandwiches, hot and cold drinks and other bakery products to eat in or out. The cakes are particularly sublime, out of this world and the staff aren't mean when it comes to portion sizes!The cafe has a fragrance of freshly baked bread which resonates from the back of the shop. It is often very busy inside and I have not been in when there has not been a queue, but it is definately worth the wait to taste the food here. It is a lovely place to take a break whilst shopping or working in Newcastle. The cafe won a Guardian food award recently for being a fine cafe establishment. Definately beats its competitors hands down on staff perfomance, quality of food and general atmosphere.

Bistro meal in the city centre
This is another good choice for lunch in the city centre, whether you want just a light snack or a full meal. Tables are on two floors; the ground floor serves lighter café-style items such as coffee, pastries and sandwiches, and is counter service, while the first floor is more like a bistro and has full table service. You can only reserve tables on this latter floor, and as the place is popular you'll need to come early if you want to eat in the café, or be prepared to queue.On our recent visit there was a line out of the door for a table in the café, but several available upstairs where we wanted to eat, even though we hadn't booked. The menu is chalked up on a board and includes several bistro favourites such as moules marinieres, pasta dishes and a steak sandwich. There is also a daily specials menu and we both chose from that – I had a delicious warm goats cheese and puy lentil salad while Chris had a steak burger with Swiss cheese and string fries. He drank mineral water (he was going to be driving later) and I had a small glass of rioja. The meal cost £20.20 (service not included) which I thought was good value for such tasty food and the pleasant service we received. The bistro attracts quite a mixed clientele – we saw an older couple, a family and several groups of friends all enjoying the food there. Highly recommended!
