A real gem except for Hot Summer evenings

The White Cross is a real gem of a find. Located right on the River Thames and only a stones throw from Richmond Bridge. A real pub that has not been spoilt with sky television or loud music. excellent beer and a reasonable choice of wines. The ambiance is really friendly and the views are lovely. The food is very tasty and non overpriced. One word of warning on a hot summer evening it a place to avoid as it gets over crowded and the pub had a strict policy of issuing plastic glasses if you want to drink outside in the courtyard. also on such occasions there is usually a long queue at the bar. Otherwise at any other time it is strongly recommended on all accounts.

Nearly a wash out!

We went to this popular Thames river side pub one sunny lunch time and were fortunate to find a table in the crowded courtyard by the river. The wooden benches are quite comfortable, but it would be great if they had sun shades up for those odd very sunny days we get!Was fun to see the water level rise and rise and start sloshing at right outside the pub grounds. Don't know how often the water gets that high, but it certainly entertained the kids!On to the food...the kids had a mixed platter of humous and taramasalata. Generous serving and quickly served. The others had a proper roast lunch and raved over the huge portion size and tasty food. It's a place we've taken new visitors to the area because of the great setting and good food.

Nice, non-chain pub by the river

The White Cross is on the stretch from Richmond Bridge that includes all the usual chains, Pitcher and Piano, Slug and Lettuce etc, and is a nice change, with a mixed clientele. It feels traditional, with a wide enclosed terrace with its own bar on sunny days/evenings (with plastic glasses if you want to head right to the water's edge) and lots of space upstairs and downstairs. It feels like a pub from about twenty years ago, but in a pleasing way, with dark furniture and traditional decor. Haven't tried the food but always looks OK, and it's a decent place to go if you don't want loud music or alcopops (sure you can buy alcopops if you REALLY want though).

Brilliant location on the waterfront looking over the thames this is a "cosy" pub. The upstairs is somewhat crowded with chairs and tables but downstairs is lively. The clientele are not very friendly, young professionals are scornful of under 25s but its comfy so if you can ignore that then its fine, anyway, that was on one night and the downstairs was very friendly. Drinks were a bit too expensive and the atmosphere is a bit too uptight but its not a bad pub, comfy and warm.

Richmond Riverside Pub

The White Cross is a traditional, historic pub located right by the river in Richmond. It is so close to the water that you may well get flooded in if there is a very high tide (there must be worse things than being stuck in a pub!).One of the most popular pubs in Richmond, it is pretty busy all year round, though rammed in summer. Some lucky people manage a table outside, though there is plenty of room inside over two levels. It has been recently renovated and I was pleasantly surprised by what a nice looking pub it is inside. They have a bistro with a varied menu, offering hot meals and lighter options. We stopped by for lunch one autumn day. The weather was mild enough to sit outside and we got a great table with views of the river and Richmond Bridge. The boys had the daily special - Beef Bourguignon, and I just had a Tandoori chicken wrap.A great place for a drink and to enjoy gorgeous Richmond!
