This is a top notch co-op. Very bright and smart inside. A large range of things from fresh food to electrical goods to shaving foam to newspapers. Very popular with locals and it offers the excellent Co-op dividend scheme too. Seems to have some good special offers on all the time. Big fair trade range, lots of organic stuff and parking and bike racks too. It is irritating that the disabled and family bays are aparently never policed so they tend to be used by the inconsiderate and rude rather than families and disabled, but you can't have everything. The staff are always very pleasant and friendly, which must say something about the co-op as a place to work as well.

Co-op Headington

The Co-op in Headington is a small supermarket in competition with Somerfield. There is parking directly outside the front doors and along the side, also a small car park across the road which is monitored by a really nice bloke who I often have a chat with. The staff here are very friendly and helpful and I know if I need something then they will do their level best to help me find it. Quite a modern open layout with small freezer section that covers the basics, no deli counter. You can buy papers and mags, lottery tickets, stamps, tobacco etc plus your everyday goods. I can usually find what I want in there although nothing too fancy. I wish they sold rice milk though! The only down side of the Co-op in my opinion, is that the goods in general are more expensive. They do have bogof and special offers but rarely have I found a really good one that made me get my purse out. I am sure this is down to the economy but it's a shame as I think they are coming a poor second to Somerfield now in the pricing war. I like the meat section which always has a decent variety of chops and chickens. I wish the home baking section (flour etc) was more varied and economically priced - I am a home baker! The Co-op sells electrical goods and various household items, birthday cards, books, sticky tape...blah, blah. This is useful but again a bit expensive and you can usually get it all cheaper a few shops down. I like looking round the electrical stuff but it seems to sit on the shelves for a long time and new bits only pop up occasionally. The boxes could also do with a bit of a dusting when they come out of the store room as I once discovered after buying a hairdryer from there. Anyway, an O.K. shop but if you want a bit more variety and to spend less money then sadly don't shop there!

Buy lunch, go to the park

One of the main things this Co-op has going for it is location. It's opposite a pleasant park with picnic tables. If you work in Headington, what better way to spend an occasional summer lunchtime on a sunny day than going to the Co-op, grabbing a drink, some sandwiches and a newspaper, and wandering across to the park to chill out and enjoy the open space after being cooped up at work during the morning. It has some parking too - a total luxury in Headington! Though do watch out for the traffic that builds along London Road during the rush hour and at school run time.
