The Chesterfield is known as "The Chess" by local residents of Bingham. The pub and restaurant is pleasant and clean, but in my opinion seriously overpriced. For example, if you like wine, then be prepared to take out a second mortgage! I think this pub has lost its way a little as it has the potential to be a really nice pub/restaurant. However, they have expanded the restaurant so it's now more of a restaurant than a pub, this means that seating in the pub area is limited. The restaurant serves reasonable gastro-style food, but to be honest I've had much better at a much lower cost. They think they are better than they are and I have spoken to others locally who agree. The service is average at best, on one occasion we sat waiting for 10 minutes after our food had arrived while they tried to sort out some cutlery. The waiting staff are usually young teens who don't seem to be that bothered about mistakes. We now actively avoid the Chesterfield for drinks and opt for the Horse and Plough down the road instead as althought the Horse and Plough is expensive it's no where near as expensive as the Chesterfield. The major advantage that the Chesterfield has over the few rivals in the area is its large beer garden to the rear. Nice in the summer, but still drinks are very expensive for a small town. I think the lack of real competition of similar pubs has lead to them charging excessively. The pub seems to be popular with Uni students and seems to be a bit of a meeting place during holidays. The pub has an early bird menu which can offer better value.
