Oh my God what have they done!

The girls and I (ok we.re all 40 something) troop through from Harrogate to York two or three times a year.It has become habit to shop and then have a late lunch and more than a few carafes of vino at Oscars. It was our own fault really-we didn't notice the name change. It did all seem a bit odd that it was earily quiet save for a few odd looking men stood at the bar.Still the waiter assurred us that the business had merely changed its name.I was not totally convinced but some of my fellow shopaholics had foregone breakfast and were in need of food. They reasoned that the food would still be good.Wrong.This place is bad.To make matters worse it has replaced a bar that was really good.York is a poorer place to visit now without the attraction of Oscars. And as for Stonegate yard there really is no excuse for a place to be as poor as this.

Perfectly reasonable to me

Was in Stonegate Yard last Saturday and thought it was fantastic. Started of upstairs with a bite to eat then moved out into the courtyard for drinks. Food was reasonable, big hearty portions and very tasty indeed. Our waiter was charming and attentive. Moved outside after dinner and enjoyed a few cheeky vodkas until home time. I personally think this place is great and will be back again. It just looks a lot cleaner and crisper than it used to and the music was fab!!

As the other reviewer Oogywawa mentioned, Stonegate Yard is the reincarnation of the once much (student) beloved Oscar's. Now relocated to around the corner, Stonegate Yard is a work in progress. Gone are the outside accompaniments of garden-esque marquee style cover ups. Instead are what can best be described as 'cheap sheeting' that covers the courtyard space. Add to this fuel charged 'heaters', and the noise, the eye pollution (down'd tools, left over building materials etc) and you have a less than plesant or relaxing environment. The menu is the 'usual' burger fare. Student fans the LARGE platters of nacho's remain. Your hangover cure all is safe. So everything remains the same. And yet is 'supposedly' being modernised into a different and brasserie. T'oscar's (sorry Stonegate Yard) may have to rethink their aspirations as a 'brasserie'. Being shot hot air up your backside (AND THE NOISE), short of being very environmentally 'unsound' gives a cheap and shoddy interval for a 'relaunch'. Either close and complete building works. Or turn off those jet engine heaters, let customers 'chill' (and hear themselves and others) and offer suitable discounts off the menu. 'meh' for now. I'll be intrigued to go for a revisit when it is a proper brasserie...

Stonegate Yard is the reincarnation of the space that was formerly Oscars. What a golden opportunity this is for the new proprieters and will they take it?The reason behind my incertitude stems from a disingenuity between word and actions. A good conversation with the manager when I visited left me hopeful: investment in infrastructure including bespoke ornate iron wine racks behind the bar - fashioned by a local smithy and very much an eye-catcher; the awning for the picturesque outside yard is being made to bespoke specifications in Italy to provide a crowd pulling feature... and yet...They committed what to me is the bete-noir of all mistakes by appearing to be closed when still open. Mediocre bars do what great bars never do - they start clearing up before they are shut. They put stools on tables to indicate they should not be sat on, they clean the bar with noxious chemicals when colleagues are still serving drinks - unforgiveable. All to save a bit of time so staff can go clubbing after hours. Sorry - but that is not what a service industry is about - you serve until closing - you close - THEN you clean !! Difficult to comprehend - not really - staff should stay until required and be fully paid until they leave. Stonegate Yard are not alone in this practice but have the chance to start as they mean to go on.So - the Jury is still out on this place and probably won't return a verdict for a couple of months until all work is finished and they are really "open".
