Hen gao xing kur nee shoa qua chi Yip,Well I never thought I would add my praises here, but I visited it this morning and the foods and staff were magnificant. Just visit and have a look at the choice of oriental foods for us all to try.Say "Ni Hao" (sounds like Knee-How) and say "Hello" to the staff who really appreciate a chat with anyone who tries to speak chinese, or more correctly Mandarin.I ask how much does it cost in Mandarin "zhe ge jia zhi duo shao" and they spoke back in English, so no need to learn chinese. Why not ngive them a try and you can get green tea direct from China and who knows you may even meet an Olympic champion? The staff are "Champions" to me. Wor hur ta hao pan yeo. Xiexie. NoYa.......

Supermarkets. Ok not the most exciting place on earth, nor in York for that matter (there are ducks after all), but there is a new market and ‘super' it certainly is. York used to have a fabulous organic store, home of freshness, healthiness and smug middle class vitality/vanity. This didn't last long, the smugness wasn't enough for a sustainable profit margin. Today the middling classes comfort foods of beans and pulses has been replaced by a exciting, and authentic Chinese food store, Chi Yip Case & Carry. Amongst the very authentic Chinese groceries there's with the live crab and lobster tanks for fresh firsh, so you can take ‘clampy' and ‘clawy' home for dinner…If boiling alive crustaceans is not your thing, then there are some other genuine Chinese delights that are well worth trying out. Half the fun is identifying what is in the packet, and then how you're going to create something fabulous with it that evening. A combination of BBC2's latest ‘how to cook Chinese' with the provisions at Chi Yip would impress. The very fresh fish counter, is not only worthy of nose against tank viewing, but there's some very high quality and reasonably priced fishes that won't be swimming away from you. As a visitor and traveller to China, one of the fun aspects was getting lost amongst and finding a little known, on the street place to eat. In England (especially outside London) I have never able to revisit such gastronomic adventures. Less supermarket and more adventure in cooking, I'll be returning to ???? to fine tune my stir fries, amaze at the frozen aisle (frog legs don't you know), re-stock up on some seriously good Green Tea (packs a caffeine fuelled punch Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!) and see if Clampy and Clawy would like to come round for tea.
