About Us

Barnes & associates began independent trading in 1996; created in response to a need for advice in modern tree and landscape management techniques in both the domestic and commercial sectors.

Our lead arboricultural consultant is Ian Barnes he is a Arboricultural Assocation Registered Consultant, Professional Member of the Consulting Arborist Society, TrustMark Approved Tree Consultant along with being a Chartered Environmentalist.

Sue Barnes leads the tree & landscape design area of our business, she is is a Fellow of the Arboricultural Assocation and also a Chartered Environmentalist, and a member of the institute of Horticulture.

Our advisory service has evolved to cover large and small projects, including development site assessment and management, tree surveys for planning, complex planning applications and appeals, in addition to other areas of arboricultural and landscape expertise.

We have strived to develop a holistic approach to tree and land management through detailed tree survey /assessment programmes, which allow for the sympathetic and economical retention of tree cover where appropriate.

Our landscape design service provides ecological sensitive designs using specialist software. Providing planting plans, plant schedules and specifications.

The management of trees within development sites is a major sector of our work. We supply BS5837 tree reports. Through consultation with architects, engineers and planners, we can assist in the safer retention of trees allowing developments to blend in with the environment surrounding them - thus minimising their impact upon the broader landscape, significantly increasing their market value.

We provide landscape plans for development sites working closely with ecologists to increase habitat potential.

We provide specialist decay assessments of trees using state of the art technology, Picus Sonic Tomography, Picus Treetronic, and more recently thermal cameras working with many tree owners to ‘save trees'.

Tree Surveys and Assessments

This service provides a range of tree inspections that can be tailored to clients' particular requirements, covering singular trees through to groups, woodlands and large estates.

We provide individual Tree Reports through to Quantified Tree Risk Assessments Surveys (QTRA) a cost affective survey method more suitable for larger estates.

We provide advise and managment plans for trees based on health and safety and risk.

Assessment of health or structural integrity of trees can be achieved in various ways, from a visual tree assessment (VTA) that explores the body language of the tree, through to various non-invasive technologies, which can explore internal condition, tree stability and vitality to help inform an assessment of the trees safety.

Early identification of a pest, disease, biotic or abiotic factors can be significant to longer term tree health, and is therefore essential to ensure that trees are as safe as is reasonably practicable.

Tree inspections are generally made from ground level, though climbing inspections are offered where necessary to allow informed remedial management.

We are specialists in the use of picus sonic tomogram and Picus Treetronic tomogram providing internal scans of trees, detailed with the further details section.

We are trained users in the the use of Theraml Imaging for tree surveying.

Trees and the Law

We are here to help with your tree related problems. You may have concerns over a planning application nearby to your tree or may have received a TPO (Tree preservation Order). We can help and advise on the most suitable route.

We are experienced in many aspects of trees and the law, Ian Barnes has undertaken additional traing in this area.

There are extensive laws which control the status and protection of trees and woodlands to ensure their longevity and care. Most of these are statutory and dealt with by your Local Authority or the Forestry Commission. Barnes & Associates are well informed with all regulations relating to the protection of trees, and can inform and guide all our clients down the necessary paths to avoid costly mistakes.

We have recently undergone additional training in court room and report writing skills in this specialist area.
