Disappointing Food and overpriced
Lovely setting but food overpriced and very disappointing. The chicken dish I had was about KFC level - but not quite as fresh I suspect - and the starter was positively mean in terms of its proportion. I would have expected much better as the prices are quite high.

A gem in the country
This is a great traditional pub with fantastic food. The owners added chalet style rooms within the extensive grounds a few years ago. Not good for wheelchair users I would say, but the pub is pet friendly. The breakfast includes locally sourced sausages and jams. It is an ideal place to stay if you want to visit the attractions such as Leeds Castle. Try visiting the vineyards also. Chapel Down at Tenterden and the Biddenden vinyards are worth a look. The pub serves wonderful Kent cider from Biddenden as well as local real ales.You must really eat at the pub because there is nothing else around for miles. You can either eat in the pub which has excellent service, or eat outside on the extensive pergola covered tiered patio.This is a real treat for £86 B&B. The pub does a special three course meal Monday and Tuesday for £13 otherwise it's a la carte. They have a great wine list (e.g. Ravenswood Old Vine Zinfandel) expect to pay about £70 for a three course meal for two with a decent bottle of wine.

Great pub off the beaten path in Kent
One sunny spring day, after a visit to Leeds Castle, we headed to the Black Horse Inn in Thurnham (about 4.5miles from the castle). I had read about the pub in advance and decided that it sounded like the perfect place for an 'off the beaten path' lunch...though although it seems to be in the middle of nowhere, it is in fact only 5-10 minutes drive from the busy M20 motorway.The Black Horse Inn is home to a small B&B and a character-filled pub and restaurant. The pub has a small bar area at the front and a larger restaurant section to the rear, along with a nice looking terrace out the back for long summer lunches or a relaxing warm weather drink.Arriving for a late lunch on a Saturday, we were relieved find a couple of free tables. We loved the atmosphere of the place, and quickly ordered a beer whilst we checked out the menu. Service throughout our meal was friendly, though not the fastest...and our food took forever to come... That said, we weren't in a hurry anyway, though we were pretty hungry by the time it arrived!To start we shared the Tartlet with blue cheese, roasted tomatoes and rocket, which was one of the specials of the day. For main course we both had the Roast Venison Steak with veggies and red wine jus. The venison, which was also on the specials menu, was really delicious and came with lots of roast sweet potato - which is my favourite food! We were too full for dessert, though there were some tempting sounding options. The Black Horse Inn is located 1 mile east of the A249 via Detling Village and 3.5 miles north-east of Maidstone Town.

Great B&B Pub
The Black Horse Inn is a great pub in Kent, and will be given my first 5 stars. The Black Horse is also a B&B with 6 rooms which have wi-fi enabled. Who says that the country side can't be high tech too! Whilst I didn't stay at the B&B, but at another B&B just next door called the Thurnham Keep, my then girlfriend and I went to the Black Horse Inn at two occasions. The food is really good, tasty and comes in handsome portions... which is why the Black Horse Inn is considered as a gastronomic pub. We both ordered the steak fillet which came out just perfect, sizzling hot and not too cooked. The wine list is quite large for a pub, and the staff is very friendly. I understand the Black Horse Inn became a pub sometime in the 18th century. The decoration is typical of a pub in the countryside. They also have live bands on Wednesday nights, which we had the pleasure of listening to.If you do plan going to the Black Horse I'd strongly recommend you reserve as the place fills up very rapidly as it is very popular with the locals.I'll remember this pub for a long time both for the experience I had there and the night that marked the end of a very lovely story.
