My favourite steak house!

The Jacobean Barn has been renovated and taken over by a few companies I think in the last decade or so but I originally remember it being a Beefeater. It was successful then and wanting to give it another go now it had changed hands I visited on a summer Saturday afternoon with my family. The four of us arrived early and entered the bar to the left of the entrance. The drinks were very reasonably priced and we sat in what I would like to describe as the conservatory! A room without much of a view, but is extremely cozy in the winter with a fire blazing. The comfortable tall chairs at the tall tables are a welcome rest to tired legs although I can imagine for the shorter person they would be a challenge to perch on, as my mother struggled to get seated and at 5'4" she's not particularly short! There are other more comfortable arm chairs to be sat at also. Should you not be able to get a table in the restaurant you are able to eat from the same menu in the bar which is a strange set up if you ask me, but what do I know about running a bar/restaurant! We were sat at our table (which could comfortably hold 6) on time and handed the menus. Being that the steak is extra special here my whole family opted for this, medium rare and a lettuce wedge on the side. When the meals arrived (roughly a 30 minute wait but this was to be expected and perfectly reasonable) I was surprised at the amount that you got on your plate for the money they were charging. Firstly the steak was beautifully cooked to perfection, with the juices still visible without showing too much! There were the fries in a seperate bowl (crispy, not too fat, not too thin, not too overcooked), the lettuce wedge with a choice of I think 3 dressings, although I can personally recommend the bacon and honey mustard. Next is the slice of onion loaf which does look like an onion bharji as someone on here stated previously, minus the spices. It is crisp and crunchy and adds texture to the plate. There is also a fried tomato and some leaves (spinach?). The presentation is wonderful and I like the idea of keeping the lettuce and fries separate. With so much on the plate it took us a while to devour, the whole time the waitress checked on our liquid levels and interrupted at the right times to check whether other drinks were required. The staff that we were in contact with were polite and professional. The cost of this meal was about £80 with drinks included which I thought was fantastic for what we got. I have been to this restaurant on many occassion since and highly recommend it. It is reasonably easy to get a table here if you book over a week in advance or sometimes even on the day if it is a weekday. The ambience of the place is lovely, with the whole family welcome, there is always lots of lively chatter occurring throughout the restaurant.I wouldn't recommend this for a business dinner due to the level of noise and sometimes the service has been slightly slack (we were seated by the mens toilet on one occassion) and we felt forgotten about but at least we had a bottle of wine to help us through the lonely 30 minutes when our waitress didn't come!If you are in the area then I think you should go just because it is a bargain and the steak is the best I've had.

A good steak house

The Jacobean barn is situated just of the A2, combined with a large car park access is very easy.Apparently it was previously a Beefeater or similar. The menu choice was good with a wide range of starters. I selected the chicken and chorizo skewers served on red peppers...very tasty but not too filling.Being a steak house there are the usual variations of cuts and sauces. Each steak being served with chips or jacket potato, along with a quarter of iceberg lettuce with dressing and their own onion loft. The presentation of the lettuce was somewhat ‘too rustic' for me. The onion loft reminded of an (un-spiced) onion bhaji ...unusual and quite tasty. There was a good selection of non-steak options I was very, very tempted by the Mahi Mahi (a firm white fleshed fish from the South Pacific) which you don't see on many menus. Expecting to be having fish the next day I went with the flow and selected a fillet steak.Service was good and although a Saturday night we were not rushed and the prices reasonable.Worth a visit!
