Lovely homely restaurant situated (as the name suggests) in Bridge street in heart of Hitchin. The food is excellent and the service friendly and attentive (without being intrusive). It's a trifle overpriced in my opinion (especially the booze) but you'll have a great night out. One minor gripe - the tables are all rather close together which makes getting to your place (and getting out to go to the loo etc) rather a struggle at times.

This is a place that has lots of promise, so don't be put off by three stars. The location, on the edge of the town centre, is easy to find and get to. The immediate ambience is of a restaurant with people having a very good time. The menu and wine list were both well selected and had variety. The specials of the day and seasonal menu were well chosen and had enough to choose from - even for my pernickety partner. I started with Crab Patee and my partner had Duck Spring Rolls. The carb pate was fine, if a little balnd, but edible. My partner's spring rolls were delicious and disappeared quickly. My main course was bistro chicken (Stuffed with stilton and wrapped in bacon) whilst my partner has a vegetarian "wellington" stuffed with cheese and vegetables. The checken was excellent: tender, moist and nicely flavoured. The "wellington" too was delicious with flaky pastry and good flavours. The bill for all this (including a half bottle of decent Chablis and mineral water) was about £60 - not bad value at all.SO why three stars and only "promising"? The night we were in there was a large party and this disrupted service quite badly. We arrived on time just after 8PM, had our order taken by 8:20 but didn't get the main course until nearly 9:30. Speaking to ataff when we paid the bill they appeared quite rushed albeit cherrful. This suggests that the delay in service wasn't typical, but that only be confirmed by another visit. All in all, another visit is planned. If the service is better, then this is the sort of local restaurant a town like Hitchin would be lucky to have.
