I went to this place last night for a friends birthday meal. Though there was space between courses the food was excellent and good value for money. All the staff were very welcoming and were quick to provide good service for quite a large party of people. I would definately eat here again

I have been to this restaurant 3 times now, and i love it! Im all for the buffet personally, £11 dinner and £7 for lunch. i went for lunch today and its so lovely! its more expensive to go to the pizza hut buffet! the food was great, just what i wanted. its just good food, theres no fancy decorations, no 'lad dee da' about it, its just a great buffet absolutely full of various dishes. the only downside for me is that there is often no duck left, however they do continuisly resupply the buffet, the duck goes in an instant because its so lovely - not there fault that every single person in the restaurant swarms at the duck the instant its put out! i would maybe reccomend having at least 2 trays for the duck, but that's just me. there must be about 25 different dishes, including soup, curry, chow mein, sweet and sour, battered meatballs, bbq pork, ribs etc etc the list goes on. Dont expect the same food from the buffet as a 5 star massively expensive chinese, but great for the value. I am definitely going again! There is of course say Pilgrim house, but they are so funny about you having to eat every scrap on your plate, you have to order what you think you can handle rather than been able to pick at various different dishes like this restaurant, and Pilgrim is expensive. I am so happy i have found a relatively cheap, good value place for Chinese. Yes the seats aren't leather, but who cares! you get what you pay for, and i love it, and all the staff have been really nice to me. It is also worth mentioning that they don't care if you don't completely finish your plate, my girlfriend left quite a bit on her plate and they didnt mind at all. its nice to have no strings attached. (bare in mind this is coming from a student who is very poor. highly recommend for students! yum!)

the food was okay, nothing particularly bad except the rice was a bit dry. apart from that food was mostly good. waitress (the only female working) was very rude with an attitude problem. we ordered duck and left the fat on the side. she then pretty much ordered that we eat the fat if we wanted to order anything else. i couldnt actually believe she was serious and told her we didnt wish to eat duck fat. she continued to be rude and abrubt throughout our meal. afterward we were served by other male waiters who were much more polite and friendly. would have had a much more enjoyable meal if she had worked better on her customer service skills.

went there last night was very dissappointed, all our dinners were served at different times, had my lemon chicken (which was quite nice) on its own i'd finshed it and they brang out the rice (waste of money for them) my brother ordered lemon chicken it then arrived 20 mins after my meal we paid the bill whilst he finsihed it off! 10% service charge WHY, had to keep getting different waitresses because they couldnt speak english would never go there again.. waste of money

Not as good as before.....

I visited last evening for the buffet, something I have really enjoyed the several times I had visited before and was really looking forward to. Unfortunately the self-service buffet has now changed to a table-service buffet, accompionied by 10% service charge, there are also a couple of other restrictions worth noting.. first, there has to be a minimum of two people and secondly, you have to finish everything on your plate otherwise you may be charged the full a-la-carte price for a dish. Although we were a bit disappointed at the demise of the self service buffet we decided to give it a go. We were questioning our wisdom onlyu moments later as the first thing we received were some stale, slightly discoloured prawn crackers, though these were replaced without fuss. The prawn toasts we had seemed more like sesame seed topped fried bread with no sign of any prawn, around this time I was wondering if there had been a change in ownership, it certainly seems there has been a change in supplier as many of the dishes whilst ok seemed not as good as what we have had at the restaurant before. Overall quite a disappointing experience, especially as this had been one of my favourite places to eat out.

Very impressed with the variety of the buffet, we have been at lunchtime and in the evening. We have also had the al la carte menu and enjoyed something that was a bit different. Would definately recommend .

I have eaten in here many times since living in Southampton and always found the service to be top notch. The staff are willing to assist in any way possible and are efficient and just right in their attention to your party. I have only eaten in the evenings from the set meals but they are more than happy to change something from the meal if you don't like it (for example if someone doesn't want a prawn dish you can change for a chicken one) without extra charge. Chopsticks or conventional knife and fork can be used and they sell chinese beer which my dad loves.

This popular Chinese restaurant is located in the heart of the city centre, a stones throw from the historic bargate. To enter, head for Dolcis and go up the stairs. I came here for the all you can eat buffet (£13.80) with a group of work colleagues on a Friday evening. The place seems very popular - it got very busy later on but I have to say I was disappointed by the food and the service. Alot of the food was cold and congealing - not pleasant. I mostly stuck to non-meat dishes as I wasn't convinced the food hadn't been constantly reheated. The desserts were a chocolate fondue fountain with bananas and marshmallows. Or you could help yourself to Asda or Tesco Value icecream from a freezer at the end of the buffet counter. I certainly don't think I got my moneys worth. The bar is reasonably stocked but the service was dire. Having worked in a bar for many years it really annoyed me that when I ordered spirits and a mixer, the bar man put the coke in first, then added ice, then added the spirit. He seemed confused when I pointed out to him that it's conventional to put the spirit in first, then ice, then the mixer, thus not losing any 'fizz'. Not usually anal about these things but it bugged me!

The Ocean Dragon has been a chinese restaurant for near 40 years, Formally know as the Golden Palace and before that Joy Sheen, the place once had a magnificent reputation for food and staff quality. Since the untimely death of the original owner, the place has fluctuated with less than perfect service but the food has always been very good. I personally would not have the inexpensive buffet and would always go Al Le Carte. Like all things in life, you get what you pay for. The buffets are good value but they cater for the less well educated palet. If you enjoy real, Europeanised, Chinese food I would reccommend the Ocean Drag. Ask fo Ken, he is the owner.

I've been to the Ocean Dragon twice now. They do a fantastic lunchtime and evening buffet, all you can eat! The food in these buffets is of good quality, the meats are tender and the sauces are rich and flavoursome. The buffet is well stocked (although you have to keep a look out for the arrival of the duck, which disappears fast!) and the staff are friendly. I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone in or visiting Southampton.
