This pub makes the very best of its situation, gazing over the estuary to Hayling Island.Comprising of expansive stone floors, open fires and wooden beams, it was bustling even on a Monday evening when most other pubs around were dormant. Whilst it does nothing exceptionally it manages to deliver well on all counts. The welcome is warm (if not effusive) and all of the staff are cheerful and obliging. The food is hearty and whilst the main menu is distinctly pub foody and no doubt mainly not prepared on the premises, where they really hit the bullseye is with their specials board.Consisting mainly of freshly caught local seafood, there is a wealth of impeccably delivered dishes on parade. The portions are certainly not parsimonious either and ensure diners leave content and feeling their money has stretched that extra mile.As importantly, and often overlooked in pub reviews, the Gales beers were on top form. After all isn't that what pubs used to be for - drinking. Such is the pressure on pubs in the current climate that I'm the first to acknowledge that food is key to survival, but I'm always irritated when I go on a pub's website and the beer isn't even mentioned - how's that justifiable?Anyway, on all counts The Ship won't leave you disappointed and if the weather's kind, you can drink and dine outside, ensuring the whole experience is a treat to behold.

I love this pub - very relaxed atmosphere despite always being extremely busy - food is lovely and the fish is simply the best.
