Don't believe what must be a fake review from the owners. I went for a drink & food with mates after work. It's been ages since I was last out in Billericay. Stewarts used to be our favourite but it was just an embarrassment. The muck they served up was cold and tasteless (and expensive). After one pint we went over to the Crown instead.

My friends and i love Stewarts. The new owners and staff are always welcoming and friendly. Theres always new drinks to try, and we've never had anything to complain about regarding the food. Everyones entitled to their own opinion, but your on your own, so while you're in the old fashioned crown everyone that knows how to have a great time will be in Stewarts!!

Stewarts - it's all down hill since Stewart left

Gary Stewart revitalised this place a few years ago by investing in a complete refurbishment. OK, so it wasn't to everyone's taste, but nevertheless it was smart and friendly.Alas no more. Gary has moved on (clever him) and the new owners seem to have rather less of a clue. They've tried to spruce up the decor but it is still obvious that after 4 or 5 years, the place needs a proper refurb. Oh, and what changes they have made look like they were designed by a blind decorator with appalling taste. What's with the gaudy Marilyn Munro Warhol pictures? Funky? No: in that setting, just tacky. Is the food worth it? Well Stewart's was never known for great food. And unfortunately, things have gone down hill from there. Eating with a few friends recently, the best appraisal was "adequate" - the worst, "downright awful".So maybe the warmth of the welcome is its one saving grace. Oh dear - I am afraid not. The landlord treats customers with suspicion, as if they are all likely trouble makers. I had the distinct feeling we were rather unwelcome. (I should point out that my group was a number of well dressed, 30 or 40 somethings - we didn't look like trouble). Curiously, I felt like had I been a track suited, baseball capped, spotty youth with an attitude and a chip on my shoulder, I would have blended in far more effectively. If it's been a while since you visited Stewart's, you're in for a disappointment. My advice: The Crown has just reinvented itself and has done a proper job. Go there instead. And if you want an honest boozer, Chequers is only one minute away.I'll finish on a word of advice to the landlord: cheer up, for goodness sake. Try swapping the sneer for the occasional smile.
