Intensive Courses

Automatic Intensive Driving Courses are tailored to your individual's needs by a fully qualified Driving Instructor (10 years).
All abilities catered for.
Our intensive courses usually run on consecutive days (4hrs sessions each day), but we can tailor lessons to best suit you.

We offer courses suitable for learners with no experience or plenty. To undertake any of our courses you would need to have already passed your theory test and have a practical test booked (please liaise with your instructor for suitable dates).

Automatic Cars

Learning to start, stop and steer is much easier in automatic cars. The right foot is used to control the accelerator and footbrake. Because there is no clutch, your left foot will not need to be used at all.

When the initial gear selection has been made, all subsequent changes are carried out automatically. They are regulated by the car's speed and the pressure applied on the accelerator.

In place of the gear stick, there is a selector. This looks a little like a gear stick, but instead of having R,1,2,3,4,5 (and, on some cars, 6), it will usually have P, R, N, D, although exact markings can sometimes differ.
P = Park
This is the gear you should select when securing your vehicle.
R = Reverse
This will lock your car into reverse gear.
N = Neutral
When the car is in neutral you will not be able to move forwards or backwards, but the car won't be secure unless you apply the handbrake too.
D = Drive
You should select this gear for driving. When in drive, your gears will automatically change up and down depending on your speed and the incline of the road.

Automatic cars allow drivers to concentrate on the more important things, such as planning ahead and steering. Driving an automatic means you'll have little or no chance of stalling, can make learning to drive much easier and take most of the stress out of driving. Mastering clutch control is, for many people, the hardest part of driving. Bypassing this altogether can make driving much easier and so more practical and enjoyable. Hill starts are also much easier in an automatic car.
You can learn and take your test in an automatic car. If you struggle with gear changes, this could be the difference between a pass and a fail.

No Gears, No Fears
Tired of manual lessons and not getting anywhere?
Have you had problems and difficulty learning to drive?
Does the thought of approaching a junction, selecting the appropriate gear and not stalling get you in a panic?
Have you already failed one or more tests and lost confidence?
If you said yes to any of these questions you may want to consider learning in an automatic car. Although this may not be quite what you had in mind, consider this: automatic cars have no clutch or gears; this makes driving much easier and allows you more time to concentrate on what is really going on around you. People who have failed tests on the following faults may benefit from driving an automatic.
Test faults typical to manual cars:-
Manoeuvres - Control. - Failure to maintain co-ordination with foot controls to keep the vehicle moving slowly enough to obtain the steering accuracy required.
Gear Faults - Failure to select, wrong selection, coasting, looking down at the gear lever or poor steering control whilst gear changing.
Moving off under control - Faults causing rough moving away, stalling or rolling back on hills. - Usually caused by poor balance or co ordination of clutch, gas and handbrake.
Progress - Avoiding undue hesitancy. - Waiting when it is safe to proceed at junctions and roundabouts. When caused by lack of ability to move away quickly enough or the lack of confidence in being able to move away without stalling even though a gap is clearly safe to proceed in.
Using an Automatic vehicle could eliminate the above faults and although once upon a time, automatic cars were only available for large/luxury cars, these days automatic transmissions are available for every possible model and make on the market. Plus, anyone who failed on the above faults will lack confidence in their ability to "move off" and in meeting situations will avoid stopping when their instinct tells them they should, simply because they don't want the problem of having to "move off" again, especially if it's on a hill.
If you feel that any of the above is reflected in your driving we recommend that you try an automatic. You can do this by trying us for one lesson and see how you feel. Then you can make an informed decision.
