Expensive but classy

I really enjoyed my meal here. We chose from the set menu which was £35 a head for three yummy courses... I loved the cornish Cod main course. The puddings were of course tiny as they usually are in fine dining restaurants but they tasted divine. The restaurant is owned by John Burton Race who always seems to be on TV at the moment so god only knows when he actually cooks here, but the food was of a very high standard. The service was good too though the kitchen was pretty noisy. The wine was expensive of course but we enjoyed our night.

Nice, but not as nice as it thinks it is!

The food was good, but it wasn't anything out of the ordinary which I would expect from a chef such as John Burton Race. The atmosphere was somewhat stuffy, with a definite air of pretention. The waiters were good, always pulled your chair out for you to stand and be seated. However, they were not forthcoming in offering bread, it seemed that they were happy to keep your champagne topped up as we were paying ( a lot!) for it but not the stuff that was gratuitous! It was an enjoyable evening, but the restaurant lacks a certain something....oh yes, atmosphere!

Stayed 6th June 2008.Separate 'B&B' rooms a few streets away from the restaurant.Convoluted arrival, have to collect escort and key from the restaurant to find the rooms. Free parking permit, very handy. However, even though it was 5.30pm when we entered the room (Old Mill Creek, contemporary, quiet) it had not been cleaned from previous guests. After it was cleaned we were told that anything in the mini-bar was complimentary, looked inside and found single small jug of milk! Tea/coffee tray did have nice little nibbles though and rather good half bottle of house red.Dinner was £35 set menu as part of overnight deal, however, very limited and appeared more suitable as luunch menu, so quickly switched to a la carte.Food very good, could not fault it, imaginative and delicious, service excellent. Price was £180 with house wine and coffee for two.Next morning, no hot water in our room. Breakfast was cooked by junior chef but atmosphere spoilt by him and two other staff messing around in adjoining kitchen. As a treat for our wedding anniversary it was sadly disappointing.Would never stay again, for a special event/celebration in Devon, suggest you choose somewhere with a proven track record such as Gidleigh Park Hotel or Coombe House Hotel, both superb: beautiful, subtle and peaceful without too many pretentious fripperies. Although obviously a little unfair to compare to the New Angel!Would certainly eat at the New Angel again. Have since heard that lunch is very good value.
