Not the cheapest place you will ever stay but wow, one of the most beautiful, set in the most amazing countryside. You can see the peaks of Skiddaw from the hotel and the views down to Bassenthwaite Lake, which I think is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Lake District (and the only one with the word 'Lake' in its name - interesting bit of trivia for you there!)They only have 42 rooms but each room is individual. The suites are amazing, the the Tower suite even has its own old stone staircase up to its private terrace. The building is 4 centuries old and used to be a private stately home. It is now owned privately by a famly who have been there for three generations now. The hotel is pure class.
