The Elm Tree is just across the road from The Angel in Durham, (which I have also reviewed), and so you will find that a few of the same people will frequent both bars, but the clientele in the Elm Tree tend to be a bit older and the atmosphere a tad more sedate. Here you will find retired rockers and beer bellied ex goths. There are more oldies on the jukebox - you might find a bit of Bowie or Kate Bush which can only be a good thing. The atmosphere is relaxed and convivial and there is a small beer garden and a dart board. The beer is about as good as can be expected and the prices not far off that of city centre pubs. A likeable place.
