I was unlucky enough to waste £20 on food here last week. If you like your food processed and microwaved - or processed and stale if it's a cold meal, this is the place for you. Not helped by the orange/yellow light provided by the faux-Victorian glass lamps, the sausage and mash was so awful I didn't eat mine (it wasn't actually what I ordered - the chef, sorry, microwave operative got the order wrong and the crutchy looking barman told me that I'd got a better deal because he'd made me the more expensive meal). Microwaved textureless sausage with Smash and ready-made gravy. My friends had an uninspiring Steak pie (prepared somewhere else) and a stale ploughman's (grated, dry cheese with pickle stired through and limp salad). Easily the worst pub grub I've ever experienced.

I usually use The Market tavern as a starting off point for a pub crawl round Durham, but have also had food during the day a few times.During the day it's a small fairly quiet place that does really nice food. There's only 2 rooms which gives it a homey intimate feel, like a proper old fashioned pub. The food is usually really nice and served quickly. The portion sizes were generous and the service was good.On a night it transforms into a party pub, playing loud music and serving drinks rather then food. The queue at the bar is often large and as it's a small bar this can sometimes become uncomfortable

Having been in this pub on morethen one occasion, I can honestly say that it's a great pub! Small by most pub's standards, in the Market Tavern this just makes the place seem more cosy and intimate, this is helped by the friendly staff.During the day/early evening they serve really nice food and for a small pub they have a surprisingly wide selection of guest ales to try, while looking out onto the Market Place. On a weekend they cash in on the 'going out' trade by turning the music up loud and partying away! The prices are reasonable and it is a great place to start a night out.
