Where to begin? I hired this person in early January to do work on my stairs. I needed it done urgently and he said he could do that but that it would be expensive because it was very skilled and he would have to do it himself bespoke. He seemed rough, but plausible, and had a great website. He said he would not start work without a deposit of £600 and that once it was paid he would "start work immediately" because of the urgency. I paid him the same evening by bank transfer. I immediately got worried because it took almost a week for him (during which time I called him maybe 4 times) to even acknowledge receipt of the same day transfer. Week after week went by. If I called him he got weird - immediately angry - sometimes raising his voice, talking over me when I was asking basic questions - unhinged frankly. Prevaricating and sometimes completely incoherent. Sometimes ok. He was like "jeckyll and hyde". Excuse after excuse was made for his non attendance. First of all - for well over a month he was waiting for wood to arrive for a bannister. Then it was other work. Then he would agree to turn up and just not arrive (that happened at least twice). On one occasion he cancelled an hour before he was due to arrive "because he just realised it was valentines day". Eventually he set a date 2 weeks hence to finally do all the work and on the day before (a Sunday) his assistant called to say he was ill and would call if he couldn't make it. He didn't call, or turn up. I called him in the morning and he said he would call back by 4pm. He didn't. I waited a week and he didn't call. I had hired other workmen to paint the stairs he was due to finish and had to pay them because I had booked out their time. Even more money lost. I then terminated his contract for fundamental breach. The sum total of the work I have to show from him is that he ripped out half my bottom stair and the post the bannister connects to. It's now been like that for over 2 months. But - and I am embarrassed to say even say I fell for this - I paid him an extra £250 for this work because he also did an extra hour long job taking some wood flooring out which he said was additional work not caught by his quote! I tried my hardest to believe in him because he had my money. Then I read an online review on him (which he has since somehow managed to get deleted from yell) which had been posted a week after I hired him - it told an almost identical story to mine. I was horrified. After I terminated him he called me over and over again. We spoke and he reluctantly agreed to return my £600. A week went by and nothing. I emailed him. He called me to tell me he now intended to repay me £300. He said he would email the same day. He didn't. The next day I emailed him to say if he did not pay me in full I would start proceedings for full compensation and post this full review. He has not paid and has ignored my email. I feel like a total fool. This man has repeated lied to me. He has delivered nothing and cheated me out of my deposit. This has been a total nightmare and I am depressed to know I have been ripped off. My strongest possible recommendation is to avoid this person at all costs. He knows someone who can create a good webpage, but I have seen no evidence of his woodworking skill (the review since removed said he had delivered totally useless work to the other customer). That's it. You can draw your own conclusions about the source of the other reviews on him. Done
